Attractive Carved Cane with Ornate Silver Accents and 1892 Dated Christmas Inscription - Cane were incredibly popular through the 19th century and into the 20th century among people from all walks of the life, with the canes growing more ornate the higher in the economic and social ladder the person was standing. Due to their popularity, they were very common gifts for Christmas and special occasions, especially among the affluent. This piece is a prime example of that, bearing an inscription indicating that it was
a Christmas gift. The slightly T-shaped grip is attractively carved with spiral flutes and one end tipped with a “SERLING” marked silver ferrule that has floral motifs and is inscribed “Xmas/1892”. The grip is joined to the shaft with a matching floral silver band inscribed with a monogram that appears to be “RCH”. The hardwood shaft is slightly knobbed
and tipped with German silver and iron. It measures 35 inches overall.
CONDITION: Very fine, the grip showing
an attractive, lightly aged tone with a few scattered hairline age cracks. The silver shows an attractively aged patina and a few minor dents in the band. The shaft is fine with a few minor age cracks and some oxidation/patina on the tip.

Cane with Inscribed Silver Band - Starting
in the 16th century, canes and walking sticks became extremely popular, first among
royalty and nobility, and by the 19th and 20th centuries having worked their way down to
the middle classes as a symbol of status. Canes were particularly popular among gentlemen throughout the British Empire, with this example presenting strong association to India given
its theme. The knob-shaped handle has been expertly carved in the form of a snarling tiger’s head that is fitted with wild glass eyes. The grip is joined to the shaft with a floral motif silver band with London hallmarks and a maker’s
mark that appears to be “F.B.&O.”, as well as the inscription “H.C./B.W./FROM/W.H.D.” The shaft appears to be ebony and is tipped with light colored horn. It measures 36 1/2 inches overall. CONDITION: Fine, the grip showing an attractively aged tone mixed with traces of
the original red/orange enamel, and a couple scattered, very small insect type marks. The dented, worn silver has an attractively aged patina. The shaft is very good with a few scattered light scuffs and handling marks and some mild wear on the tip.

Sophisticated Relief Carved Floral Column Cane - In the 18th century and early 20th century, canes began a very popular symbol of social and economic status, as well as sophistication. This cane is an excellent example of that elegant sophistication. The knob- shaped grip has been expertly relief carved in the form of a fluted, domed column with floral accents. The smooth shaft is ebonized and tipped with brass. It measures 39 inches overall. CONDITION: Very fine, the grip showing a few scattered light handling marks and an attractively, very lightly aged tone. The shaft is good retaining half
of the refinished ebonized finish, some scattered light flaking/wear, and an attractively aged patina on the brass. Estimate: 1,300 - 1,900

Highly Detailed Relief Carved Horse Head Cane - Beginning in approximately the 16th century, canes gradually became more popular among the upper echelons of society. This popularity as an affluent accessory reached its zenith around
the same time as that of horse racing, often dubbed, “the sport of kings”. It is unsurprising therefore, that many canes are found associated with the sport. This unique piece is a prime example of that with the grip expertly relief carved in the form of an exceptionally detailed horse’s head, which may have been meant to represent an owner’s prized racehorse. The grip is joined to the shaft with a smooth gold band. The shaft appears to be fruit wood and is tipped with German silver and iron. It measures 35 inches overall. CONDITION: Fine, the grip showing an attractively aged town, a few hairline cracks, and the horses right ear mostly absent. The gold band is bright. The slightly warped shaft is very good with some scattered minor handling marks
and some oxidation on the iron portion of the tip.
