Presentation Cased Factory Engraved Tipping & Lawden/Sharps Patent Four-Shot Pepperbox Pistol - Serial no. 838, 30 RF cal., 3 inch fluted bbl., blue/silver finish, gutta percha grips. This is an exceptional example of an engraved Sharps “pepperbox” pistol manufactured by English gunmakers Tipping & Lawden in the early 1860s or 1870s. Tipping & Lawden were one of only two authorized European firms licensed by Sharps to manufacture pistols based
on his innovative design. They were part of the 20 member Birmingham Small Arms Trading Company and manufactured approximately 4,000 of the Model 2 in four different calibers. This example has a blue barrel, silver frame, and gutta percha grips with relief floral designs. The frame features almost complete coverage of floral scroll engraving, which continues on the barrels in flourishes surrounding a knurled gripping area on each side. The left side of the frame is marked “TIPPING & LAWDEN/SHARPS’ PATENT” in a circle surrounding the hammer screw. The serial number is marked at the muzzle of the barrel group on the bottom. It comes in a scarce burled hardwood presentation case with blue baize lined interior and a key.
LOT 3166
Rare Engraved James Reid No. 3 Derringer Spur Trigger Revolver - Serial no. 17756, 41 RF cal., 2 3/4 inch octagon bbl., nickel finish, metal grips. Manufactured
in 1882, this is a rare example of James Reid’s No. 3 derringer or “all metal revolver”. With an estimated total of only 75
manufactured, these revolvers are rarely seen in any condition. The top of the barrel is marked “REID’S DERRINGER”. The grip area and rear of the frame are both profusely factory engraved with floral scroll, borders on the top strap, and crosshatched patterns on either side of the front of the frame.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 50% plus of the original nickel finish with the balance
having thinned to a mottled grey-brown patina, most noticeably on the barrel and cylinder, and the engraving remaining mostly crisp. The cylinder does not turn, otherwise mechanically fine.
Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
LOT 3167
Very Scarce Remington Zig-Zag Derringer - Serial
no. 65, 22 RF cal., 3 3/16 inch cluster bbl., blue finish,
hard rubber grips. Less than 1,000 of these small
pocket pistols were manufactured in 1861-1862. These
were the first Remington firearms designed to fire metallic
cartridges. Advertisements listed them as “Elliott’s Pocket Revolvers.” Many
have been lost or destroyed leaving few to fill their places in advanced
Remington collections. They are difficult to find in any condition. This
example has an early two digit serial number: “65.” The frame has the
three-line Elliot’s patent marking on the left side and the three-line
Remington address marking on the right.
CONDITION: Very good, retaining traces of original blue finish in the protected areas, otherwise
displaying the smooth brown-gray patina of a well traveled sidearm. The very good grips show
similar working gun character with a couple small surface chips. Mechanically excellent. As one of less than 1,000 made, this Remington Zig-Zag derringer serial number 65 is a true survivor of Civil War era Americana.
Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000
