Ken Payne “A Priceless Robe” Native
American Bronze Statue - This wonderful
bronze scene displays two Indian Braves on
horseback hunting amongst a stampeding
buffalo herd. They are depicted wearing only
leather trousers, with the rider in the foreground
clutching a bow and arrow with quiver on his back, while his companion in the background, who also has a quiver on his back, clutches a stone tipped spear. Their mounts are depicted in full gallop, in close proximity with a cluster of eight buffalo and one calf in flight from left to right. For Plains Indian tribes, the buffalo were a crucial resource and an important part of their culture. The white buffalo at the front of the pack is the reason for the statue’s name because a white buffalo is sacred to have as a robe. The artist behind this piece. Ken Payne (1938-2012), came from a family with ranching heritage and was well known for his bronze depictions of life in the Old West. The back of the sculpture is marked “KEN PAYNE 90/ 8/30.” Includes a hardwood base with plaque marked “A Priceless Robe” and signed “Ken Payne.” The dimensions are HT: 16 in. X W: 24 in. 18 in., weight ~45 lbs.
