Master Pauline Muerrle Signed, Game Scene Engraved, and Gold Inlaid Winchester Model 42 Pigeon Grade Style Slide Action Shotgun - Serial
no. 95637, 410 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/gold finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1950 and subsequently upgraded to the current configuration by the only female in-house
engraver Winchester ever employed, Pauline Muerrle. Blued barrel with a dual bead sights on the matted solid rib, chamber marked 3 inches, choke marked full,
and small flourish of scroll at either side of the receiver extension. The blued receiver displays highly attractive scrollwork over a matted background and enclosed by gold line inlaid borders surrounding game scenes on either side. The left scene depicts a dog flushing a covey of quail in a field, and the right shows another dog flushing a cover of quail; both are cut in semi-relief
gold inlay. The left scene is signed in the rocks at the bottom of the scene with Pauline Muerrle’s “P/M” signature. Beautifully figured, multi-point checkered forend and pistol grip stock with factory grip cap and buttplate. Stock measurements: 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 13 15/16 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 6 oz. CONDITION: Very fine as beautifully embellished/upgraded by Master Engraver Pauline Muerrle, retaining 95% plus blue and gold finishes with minor handling evidence, some brown patina on the magazine tube near the breech, and sharp checkering on the wood. Winchester Model 42 Deluxe Grade Slide Action Shotgun with Simmons Ventilated Barrel Rib - Serial no. 116003, 410 gauge, 28 inch vent rib bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1954. A deluxe grade with standard markings including offset Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech. The unique vertically
struck Winchester proofs are offset to the
left to accommodate the matted strip on top of
the receiver and the desirable, Simmons installed, post variation ventilated rib, which is fitted with a single German silver bead sight. “FULL” marked choke on the left of the barrel at the breech and 3 inch chamber. Mounted with a finely figured, double diamond pattern, checkered slide handle and pistol grip stock with a checkered Winchester buttplate. Stock measurements are drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 2 3/8 inches; length of pull 13 1/2 inches. CONDITION: Very fine overall as upgraded by Simmons, reportedly on contract with Winchester, retaining 98% plus blue finish with light handling marks and cycling wear. Crisp checkering on stock.
