Ornate Silver Mounted and Wire Inlaid Pair of Over/Under Flintlock Pistols -A) Over/Under Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 60 cal., 10 7/8 inch part octagon bbl., bright/silver finish, hardwood stock. This pair of pistols appears
to have come from the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) and use an innovative over under design with sliding pans seen on a limited number of other pistols from the early 19th century. The pans are linked to the cocks. The pistols have untranslated calligraphic inscriptions on the barrels and locks. The barrels also have spurious London proof and view marks flanking an “R” on the sides at the breeches, another partially covered calligraphic mark at the stock
lines, stars at the breech ends, and some engraving on the tangs. The furniture is silver and has “crown” and “I.J” marks on the pommel stirrups and trigger guard tangs. The furniture features classic cast and engraved martial trophies and floral patterns. The stocks and forend panels have silver wire inlaid scroll patterns, small
silver accents, and radiating stars on the back of the wrists. The pistols are not equipped to carry ramrods
as regional convention was to carry the rods with the other loading equipment.
CONDITION: Very good with dark aged patina on the furniture, gray and brown patina on the iron, some
mild oxidation and pitting, and general mild overall wear. The wood is fine and has some pieces of wire absent and mild dings and scratches. The retracting mechanism on the pan does not appear to fully function properly, but the pistol is otherwise mechanically fine.
