Very Fine Cased Pair of Engraved William Powell & Son 16-Bore Percussion Officers Pistols -A) W. Powell & Son Officers Pistol - NSN, 16 bore cal., 6 3/8 inch flat top round bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. Includes a Holland & Holland invoice for the cased pair from Maj. C. Wilcox at Ras Al Kaimah in the United Arab Emirates on April 27, 1979. There is an Hindi label bellow the R.B. Rodda & Co. trade label inside the case lid, and the left side of the barrels have “APX-80-EX-73” and “APX-81-EX-73” Indian registration marks respectively. The smoothbore, Damascus barrels have dovetailed bead and notch sights, flat tops marked “W-POWELL & SON,” swivel mounted ramrods, and casehardened breech plugs with platinum bands. The locks are signed “POWELL,” and they and the furniture have English scroll and border engraving. The wedge and wrist escutcheons are silver. The stocks have checkered, bag shaped wrists. The case contains a “WD” and “No 18” marked ball mold, an oiler, a reproduction eagle powder flask, a screwdriver, a cleaning rod, and a few balls. CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel has 85% plus distinct original Damascus patterns, and 75% original blue finish on the trigger guard. The lock retains 85% plus original case colors. The stock is also very fine and has crisp checkering and minor scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has moderate age and storage related wear including a later trade label, extensive deterioration of the lining, and some small chips. B) W. Powell & Son Officers Pistol - NSN, 16 bore cal., 6 3/8 inch flat top round bbl., brown/ casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Very fine. The barrel has 85% distinct original Damascus patterns, and 80% original blue finish on the trigger guard. The lock retains 90% original case colors. The stock is also very fine and has crisp checkering, a few minor dents, and light scratches. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 4,000 - 6,000

Fine Cased Engraved Pair of Holland, Banbury Double Barrel Rifled Percussion Travelling Pistols -A) Holland Double Barrel Pistol - NSN, 52 bore cal., 3 3/4 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. With browned Damascus rifled barrels with stirrup ramrods beneath and concave ribs with bead front sights and signed “HOLLAND. BANBURY.” William Holland is recorded as working in the Oxfordshire market town of Banbury between 1841 and 1852. Casehardened patent breeches each with platinum plug, casehardened scroll engraved standing breeches and back action locks each signed “HOLLAND”. Furniture including casehardened scroll engraved trigger plates and blued scroll engraved trigger guards. Figured walnut three quarter length stocks with checkered butts. Birmingham proof marks. In fitted mahogany case lined in burgundy baize, with some accessories including small brass mounted lacquered copper powder flask, iron bullet mold and brass mounted loading rod with worm. CONDITION: Fine, retaining 70% original casehardened/brown/blue finish throughout and crisp and clear engraving. The very fine stock has scattered age bruising and strong checkering with wear points from rubbing in the case. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are good, with the lining partially replaced. B) Holland Double Barrel Pistol - NSN, 52 bore cal., 3 3/4 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Fine with 50% original casehardened/brown/blue finish remaining overall, distinct engraving, some minor dings on the stock, crisp checkering, and some wear from rubbing in the case.
