Excellent Civil War U.S. Gwyn & Campbell Type II Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine/Union Rifle -
Serial no. 2931, 52 cal., 20 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Gwyn & Campbell manufactured around 8,200 of the Type I and Type II carbines in 1863 and 1864 with most issued to a variety of Midwestern units during the Civil War. Matching serial numbers are visible on the bottom of the barrel, frame, and breechblock. Boxed script “WHR” inspection cartouche stamped on the left of the wrist, and
small “W.H.R” inspection initials on the top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 85% plus original blue finish on the barrel with a few small areas of smooth brown patina. Retains 97% plus original nitre blue finish on the breech
block and 85% plus original nitre blue finish on the upper tang, with some light flaking and brown patina visible on the rear sight and buttplate. 95% plus vivid original case colors remain with some light thinning concentrated on the lever. Stock is also excellent as re-oiled with defined edges, a few light handling marks, and an exceptionally
crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. This excellent Gwyn & Campbell carbine would make a fine addition to any Civil War or U.S. Martial collection!

LOT 1156 Civil War Era Sharps New Model 1863 Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. C,25882, 52 cal., 22 inch round bbl., blue/ casehardened finish, walnut stock. Features blade front and Lawrence patent rear sights. Matching serial number “C,25882” marked on the upper receiver tang and underside of the barrel. Single letter ordnance sub-inspection marks stamped on some components. “E.A.W” inspection initials marked on the left of the barrel at the breech. “A.W.M” inspection initials on the underside flat of the forearm, sideplate and ahead of the buttplate tang. Two boxed script “TWR” (Thomas W. Russell) inspection cartouches stamped on the left stock wrist. CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% thinning original blue finish and 40% plus original case colors, strongest in protected areas, with smooth brown patina on the balance and sharp markings and edges in the metal. Wood is also fine as re-oiled with defined edges, scattered light handling marks and dents, and crisp cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500

Fine Massachusetts Arms Co. British Contract Greene Patent Breech Loading Percussion Carbine -
Serial no. 1253, 577 cal., 20 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. One of approximately 2,000 manufactured circa 1855-1857 on contract with the British for use in the Crimean War. All but a few hundred were reportedly scrapped for parts later, with few seeing military service. They differ from the American type in the larger caliber, the use of Queen Victoria’s “St. Edward’s Crown/VxR” cipher on the lock, British proofmarks, shorter barrel, hexadecagonal section ahead of the rear sight, sling ring on the lower tang, and a steel buttplate and patch box instead of brass. Blade front and folding ladder rear sights. British sold out of service mark on the barrel. British proofs stamped in the stock behind the lower tang. CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus original blue finish with scattered light flaking and smooth brown patina on the balance. 30% vivid original case colors remain with scattered light to moderate freckling, and some light pitting concentrated on the patchbox and buttplate. Sharp markings and edges exhibited in the metal surfaces. Stock is very fine as re-oiled with defined edges, scattered pressure dents and handling marks, and crisp proof stampings. LOT 1158 Fine Civil War U.S. Massachusetts Arms Co. Second Model Maynard Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 1059, 50 cal., 20 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Approximately 20,202 second model Maynard carbines were manufactured between 1863-1865. Some were issued to the 6th, 9th, and 11th Indiana Cavalry as well as the 10th and 11th East Tennessee Union Cavalry. Pinched blade front sight, three leaf rear sight, and two boxed script “AJN” and “JM” inspection cartouches marked on the left of the wrist. CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus original blue finish, 40% plus original case colors, scattered light freckling and some patches of light pitting, and sharp markings and edges in the metal. Stock is also fine as very lightly sanded and re-oiled with a few light handling marks, a few minor chips at the toe, and mostly defined cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500
LOT 1159 Civil War U.S. Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Navy Carbine - Serial no. 5578, 52 RF cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Government records list 6,686 of these carbines purchased for the Navy. The leather cover on the barrel was designed to protect the barrel from corrosive saltwater; many are badly damaged or absent due to extensive service, unlike this fine example which survived with its leather covering. Blade front sight, adjustable rear sight, and standard markings. CONDITION: Very good, exhibiting a mix of silver and brown patina on the casehardened surfaces with some scattered patches of light pitting. The leather barrel cover is also very good with some areas of light cracking. The re-oiled wood is fine with some scattered scratches and dents, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent. Professionally made modern replacement rear sling swivel. Estimate: 1,200 - 1,800
LOT 1160 U.S. Civil War American Machine Works Smith Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 10941, 50 cal., 21 5/8 inch part octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Reportedly 30,362 Smith carbines were purchased by the U.S. Government throughout the Civil War. Blade front and ladder rear sights. Small single letter inspection marks on various components, “L.F.R” inspection initials on the left barrel flat at the breech, “JH” inspection initials ahead of the buttplate tang, and boxed script “LFR” inspection cartouche (faint) on the left stock wrist ahead of an oval script “JH” inspection cartouche. CONDITION: Very good plus with strong traces of original blue finish, 30% plus original case colors, and smooth brown patina on the balance. Wood is fine as re-oiled with defined edges, some scattered light scratches and dings, a moderate horizontal crack visible on the left of the wrist behind the frame, and mostly clear cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,200 - 1,800
