Extremely Fine Cased Pair of Dooley, Liverpool Double Barrel Percussion Over/Under Boxlock Officer’s Belt Pistols -A) Dooley Over/Under Pistol - NSN, 16 bore cal., 6 inch solid rib bbl., casehardened/blue finish, finely checkered walnut stock. These mid-19th century large bore percussion pistols remain in superb original condition. William Dooley is recorded as working in Liverpool from 1836 and resident at his 11 Ranelagh address from 1846 until 1864. With casehardened barrels each engraved with a band of stylized foliage at the muzzle, the upper barrels with bead front sights and signed “DOOLEY. 11 RANELAGH ST.T, LIVERPOOL”, the lower barrels with stirrup ramrod. Casehardened actions and furniture including trigger guards and butt caps with hinged trap covers. Blued belt hooks and triggers. The breech ends of the barrels, actions and furniture engraved with scrollwork. Walnut butts with fine multi-point checkering and blank rectangular silver initial escutcheons inset at the wrists. London proof marks. In fitted mahogany case lined in green baize, the lid with Wm. Dooley printed trade label. With some accessories comprising three-way brass mounted copper powder flask, iron No.13 bullet mold, Dixon & Sons pewter oiler, a percussion nipple wrench, turnscrew, black lacquered cap tin and brass mounted cleaning rod with jag. CONDITION: Extremely fine. The pistol retains 85% plus original finish throughout with some age fading to some of the casehardened finish but primarily strong, vibrant colors. The belt hook retains 80% blued finish. The excellent walnut stock has crisp checkering and occasional scattered bruises. Mechanically excellent. The case is good with the lining partially replaced, lid with evidence of old glued repair around edging, and the trade label stained. The accessories are good. B) Dooley Over/Under Pistol - NSN, 16 bore cal., 6 inch solid rib bbl., casehardened/blue finish, finely checkered walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Extremely fine. 75% of the original finish remains throughout with some areas of age fading on the casehardened finish but mainly strong and vibrant case colors overall. The belt hook retains 80% blued finish. The excellent walnut stock has crisp checkering and minor handling and storage marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 7,000 - 10,000 LOT 1289 Cased Pair of Engraved Charles Lancaster Double Barrel Percussion Over/Under Boxlock Belt Pistols -A) Lancaster Over/Under Pistol - NSN, 38 Bore cal., 3 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., casehardened/blue finish, finely checkered walnut stock. These mid-19th century percussion pistols each have a rectangular silver initial escutcheon inset at the wrist engraved with the monogram “P” and the motto “PER IL SUO CONTRARIO” with a baron’s coronet above for Henry, Lord Paget, later 3rd Marquess of Anglesey. With casehardened barrels each engraved with a band of stylized foliage at the muzzle, the upper barrel with bead front sight, the lower barrel with stirrup ramrod. Casehardened action signed “C. LANCASTER/151 NEW BOND ST.T/LONDON” on the upper tang and furniture including trigger guard and butt cap with hinged trap cover. Blued belt hook and triggers. The breech ends of the barrels, actions and furniture finely engraved with scrollwork. Walnut butt with fine multi-point checkering. London proof marks. In original fitted oak case lined in green baize, the lid with Chas. Lancaster printed trade label. With some accessories including three way brass mounted leather wrapped powder flask, iron No.40 bullet mold with integral loading rod and brass mounted loading rod with worm and interchangeable jag. CONDITION: Very good. The pistol retains traces of original casehardened and blued finish throughout. The remainder is a dark grey patina with some scattered surface corrosion marks and general discoloration. The fine wood has well-defined checkering and occasional scattered bruised blemishes. Mechanically excellent. The case is good. The lining has some age related wear and staining, and the trade label is stained. The accessories are good. B) Lancaster Over/Under Pistol - NSN, 38 Bore cal., 3 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., casehardened/ blue finish, finely checkered walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Very good. The pistol retains traces of the original finish throughout. The balance is a dark grey patina with some scattered minor oxidation and discoloration. The fine wood has well-defined checkering and occasional handling and storage marks. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 4,000 - 5,500
