Cased Pair of Relief Chiseled and Carved, Gold Inlaid Coat of Arms C.L. Witte Percussion Target Pistols From the Famous Henk L. Visser Collection -A) C.L. Witte Pistol - Serial no. 558, 11 mm cal., 8 3/8 inch octagon bbl., blue/grey/gold finish, ebony stock. This pair is featured in “The Visser Collection” Vol. 1, Part 4 on pages 502 and 503. The gold inlaid coat of arms on the trigger guards matches a coat of arms identified as that of the Dutch de Surmont de Bas family. The blued, three-stage, octagonal barrels are rifled and have incised fluted accents, dovetailed blade front sights, “C.L. WITTE. ZUTPHEN.” signed in gold on top, Liege proofs, the serial numbers on the bottom and repeated on the breech plugs, and “1” and “2” among the engraving on the floral scroll engraved breech plugs, and the latter is repeated on the standing breeches which have the screw adjustable notch rear sights. The spurred trigger guards enclose adjustable single set triggers. The locks and furniture have coordinating floral scroll engraving, and the stocks have coordinating relief carved floral scroll patterns and fluting on the grips. The pair comes in their original rosewood veneer case which has “C.L. WITTE/ TE/ZUTPHEN” in gilt letters inside the lid and a fitted interior holding a suite of accessories for loading and maintenance. CONDITION: Fine with 75% plus original blue finish, bright original gold, gray and brown patina on the balance, some mild oxidation, and minor pitting. The stock is very fine and has crisp carving and minor storage wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is good with some panels of veneer detached and fading and staining on the lining. The accessories are very good and have mostly minor age and storage wear. B) C.L. Witte Pistol - Serial no. 558, 11 mm cal., 8 3/8 inch octagon bbl., blue/grey/gold finish, ebony stock. See “A”. CONDITION: Fine with 60% plus original blue finish, bright gold inlays, mix of gray and brown patina on the balance, some mild oxidation, and spots of light pitting. Aside from a crack on the left flat, the stock is also fine and has crisp carving and mild handling and storage wear. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The H.L. Cased, Engraved, and Relief Carved Pair of Liege Proofed Percussion Pistols -A) Percussion Pistol - Serial no. 20350, 52 cal., 6 5/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/bright finish. The Damascus barrels have etched “CANON DAMAS” and scroll patterns on top, “20350” ahead of the tenons, “MB”, Liege proofs, and “13.8.” The serial number is repeated on the face of the standing breeches. The locks and furniture have scroll engraving. The stocks have coordinating scroll patterns and fluted wrists. The case has a modern “LOUIS B/ARQR DU TIR NATIONAL/21 RUE DE RIVOLI/A PARIS” label inside the lid and a compliment of accessories, such as a powder flask, and ball/slug mold. CONDITION: Good with a mix of refinished brown, fire blue, and mild pitting on the barrel, mostly silver-gray on the lock and furniture, and mild overall wear. The stock is also fine and has distinct carving, small dents, worn finish, and mild wear. Mechanically fine. The relined case and accessories are very good with light age and storage related wear. B) Percussion Pistol - Serial no. 20350, 52 cal., 6 5/8 inch octagon bbl., brown/bright finish, walnut stock. See A. CONDITION: Good with a blend of refinished brown, traces of fire blue, and mild pitting on the barrel; mostly silver-gray patina on the furniture, and mild overall wear. The stock is also good and has worn finish mainly on the forend, some scattered dents and scratches, general mild wear, and distinct carving. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
