Gold and Silver Inlaid and Engraved German Percussion Double Rifle by Morgenroth of Gernrode - NSN, 58 cal.,
29 3/4 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This mid-19th century Germanic rifle was manufactured by Morgenroth in Gernrode in what is now Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The eight-
groove rifled Damascus barrels have a dovetailed silver blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight, “***MORGENROTH IN GERNRODE***” in gold inlay on the breech section, narrow gold bands followed by broader silver bands at the breech, gold stars on the breech plugs, shaped fences, floral engraving below the nipples, and scroll engraving on the standing breech tang that extends onto the rib. The upper tang also has a small inlaid silver panel with a golden border. The locks are signed “MORGENROTH” (right) and “IN GERNRODE” (left) and feature detailed scroll and game scene engraving, sprung hammer stalls, and bestial mouths with silver inlaid teeth on the hammers. The round patchbox lid has a finely detailed stag scene as well
as a floral border and scroll engraving. The nicely figured walnut half-stock has an engraved German silver ramrod entry pipe, plain German silver wedge escutcheons, a scroll pattern horn trigger guard that encloses the pair of set triggers, checkering on the wrist, large cheek rest, engraved German silver heel and toe plates, and horn buttplate.
CONDITION: Very good with most of the refinished brown and light twist patterns along the barrels, bright gold inlays, aged patina on the silver, mix of gray and brown patina on the balance, minor oxidation, and mild wear. The refinished stock is also very good and has distinct checkering, mild dings, minor edge wear, and attractive figure. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 6,500 - 9,500
