Excellent Documented Smith
& Wesson Commercial Model
1917 Double Action Revolver in Extremely Scarce .45 Long Colt - Serial
no. 180711, 45 LC cal., 5 1/2 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. Manufactured directly after the 1917 military contract, these Commercial Model 1917s lack U.S. property markings. This example has a left over U.S. inspected
barrel, which is chambered in very scarce .45 LC instead of the more common .45 ACP. The authors of the “Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson” note only “several” examples of this model are known to exist in .45 LC. This is truly a rare
S&W revolver which is missing from even the most advanced collections. The accompanying factory letter (copy) confirms the 5
1/2 inch barrel and .45 LC chambering. The letter also states the revolver was shipped to Fred G. Hammond of Canton, New York,
on January 14, 1929. A lanyard ring is mounted on the butt, a common feature found on commercial examples. The revolver is
wearing original checkered walnut grips. Matching serial numbers are on the butt, right grip panel (in pencil, faint) and barrel.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 97% plus original blue finish showing slight wear on the back strap and at the muzzle. 95% plus original case
colors remain on the hammer and trigger. The grips are also excellent with some minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. This is a highly sought after, high condition S&W Commercial Model 1917 Revolver in scarce. 45 LC that is a must have for the serious collector.
  Estimate: 4,000 - 6,000
Revolver - Serial no. 54461, 357 magnum cal., 6 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. Manufactured between 1935 and 1939, S&W Registered Magnum’s were virtually custom made “state of the art” revolvers that popularized big game handgun hunting and forged the legacy of the .357 Magnum cartridge. This revolver bears the Reg. #3323 stamped on the inside of the frame. The revolver is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, adjustable square notch rear sight, humpback hammer, S&W silver medallion checkered grips, and S&W grip adapter. Matching serial numbers appear on the butt, cylinder, and ejector shroud. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 95% plus original blue finish with scattered handling marks, muzzle wear, cylinder front face flash marks, and a cylinder drag line. Grips are good with softened checkering, a couple dings, and some marks suggesting the revolver was used as a hammer. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
