Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever
Action Rifle in .45-90 W.C.F. - Serial no.
116992, 45-90 WCF cal., 26 inch octagon bbl., blue
finish, walnut stock. The Model 1886 is one of the finest
Winchester models and was the first repeater based on designs by
John M. Browning. It was developed as a replacement for the weaker toggle link action Model 1876
which could not handle as powerful of cartridges or feed the popular .45-70 Govt. cartridges, but their production
was fairly limited at around 160,000 between 1886 and 1935. This rifle was manufactured in 1898 with a nickel-silver blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, folding tang peep sight, standard markings, and smooth forearm and rifle stock with crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Fine with 50% plus faded original blue finish on the barrel and magazine tube, mostly mottled gray patina on the action and furniture, some minor oxidation/ pitting, and general mild overall wear. The reoiled wood is very good and has mild dents and scratches, a filled chip at the upper right corner of the wrist, thin crack at the rear of the upper tang, 11 “kill notches” by the toe, and a cut by the heel on the right. Mechanically excellent. A sold representative antique Winchester Model 1886 Rifle in the powerful .45-90 W.C.F.
Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500

Nickel plating was a flashy and more durable option for a frontier saddle gun. Nickel plating resists corrosion better than blued finish. CONDITION: Fine with 75% original nickel on the frame and hammer, patches of original nickel on the more protected areas of the barrel, magazine tube, and furniture; and mottled gray and brown patina as well as mild oxidation and pitting on the exposed surfaces. The wood is good and has some dents and surface flakes, minor chipping at the edges of the wrist, a coat of oil, and mild overall wear. Mechanically fine. Overall, a flashy variation of Winchester’s frontier classic. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
