Elaborate Relief Chiseled, Silver Mounted, and Gilt Vigniat Flintlock Pistol Made for the Ottoman
Market - NSN, 65 cal., 13 inch round bbl., bright/gold/silver finish, walnut stock. This elaborate pistol was made by French gunmaker Vigniat of Marseille c. 1800-1810 for export to the Ottoman market. The cannon style barrel has a blade front sight, martial and Ottoman themed engraving on the foresection, chiseled flowers on the breech section, rear sight groove at the breech, and engraved tang with gold background. The lock is signed “VIGNIAT” at center and “A MARSEILLE” at the edge under the frizzen
spring and has raised relief martial patterns and incised scroll engraving with gilt
backgrounds and a gold lined rainproof pan. The furniture is gilt silver (vermeil) with
case and engraved floral, martial, and Ottoman themed patterns. The
trigger guard has hallmarks. The stock also has silver wire inlaid scroll patterns with floral blooms, floral carving at the end of the flats, and shell carving at the barrel tang.
CONDITION: Fine. The lock and barrel have gray patina and some mild oxidation. The lock retains strong gold in the deep relief chiseled backgrounds while the barrel has traces. The furniture retains 70% original gilding and has natural aged patina on the balance, some added pins on the stirrups and trigger guard tang, and some dings and scratches. The stock is also fine and has some slivers of wire inlay absent, distinct carving, a small chip at the forend tip, and scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Pair of Silver Mounted and Engraved Flintlock Pistols by Gandon of London -A) Gandon Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 67 cal., 10 1/8 inch
round bbl., silver/bright finish, walnut stock. These pistols are signed “GANDON” on the locks and have “LONDINI” on the top of the barrels and a “PG/*”
maker’s mark and London proof and view marks on the upper left at the breech. Peter Gandon is listed in “Gunmakers of London” by Blackmore as active c. 1698-1743. His son
was also a gunmaker until going bankrupt in 1754. The smoothbore barrels have broad silver “bumps” for front sights, fine scroll sculpting at the front of the sight flats at the breech ends, light engraving, and scrolls with bestial heads on the tangs. The locks have wyverns at the tails and scrollwork. The
silver furniture includes scrolling designs on the pierced side plates, mythical beasts on the trigger guards,
scroll engraving, and grotesque mask caps. The stocks have attractive raised relief carving.
CONDITION: Very good with silver-gray patina and mild pitting on the barrel, aged patina on the silver throughout with some areas darker than others, crisp markings and designs, and mild overall wear. The stock is also very good and has splices at the forend tip, a few thin cracks, mild scratches and dings, and some fill at the toe. Mechanically fine.
B) Gandon Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 67 cal., 10 1/8 inch round bbl., silver/bright finish, walnut stock. See “A.” CONDITION: Very good with silver-gray patina and some mild pitting on the barrel, mixed aged patina on the silver, distinct patterns and markings, and generally minor wear throughout. The stock is also very good and has splices at the forend tip, general mild scratches and dings, cracks below the lock and at the breech on the left, and a splice at the toe. Mechanically fine.
