Very Fine Cased Engraved Pair of Child, London Double Barrel Percussion Traveling Pistols -A) Child Traveling Pistol - NSN, 32 Bore cal., 6 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. Browned Damascus barrels with stirrup ramrods beneath and concave ribs with bead front sights and signed “W. CHILD. 280. STRAND. LONDON”. William Child is recorded at 280 Strand, London from 1826 until 1850. Casehardened scroll engraved patent breeches each with platinum plug, casehardened scroll engraved standing breeches and back action locks each with three position tumbler, signed “W. CHILD” and with blued safety bolt locking the hammers. Furniture including casehardened scroll engraved trigger plates with pineapple finials, blued scroll engraved trigger guards and blued foliate engraved butt caps with hinged trap covers. Well figured walnut three quarter length stocks with checkered butt, the wrists inset with a blank rectangular silver initial escutcheons. London proof marks. In fitted mahogany case, probably original, lined in dark green velvet. The lid with small printed trade
label of W. Child. With some accessories including small brass mounted copper three-way powder flask, an Eley Bros. percussion cap tin, a soft leather pouch containing cast balls, and brass mounted loading rod with worm and interchangeable cleaning jag.
CONDITION: Very fine. The barrels retain 90% period rebrowned finish. The breeches, standing breech, locks and furniture with 85% plus original casehardened finish with some age fading to the casehardening
on the locks. Engraving is crisp and clear throughout. The very fine stock has scattered age related storage and handling marks and bruises. The delicate checkering remains well defined. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine,
with the lining expertly replaced and showing some rubbing from the pistols and accessories, one partition loose, and some storage and handling marks and scratches on the exterior. The accessories are generally very good.
B) Child Traveling Pistol - NSN, 32 Bore cal., 6 1/4 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. See “A.”
CONDITION: Very fine. 90% period
rebrowned finish remains on the
barrels. The breeches, standing breech,
locks and furniture have 95% of the
original casehardened finish with some age fading on the locks.
The engraving is crisp overall. The very fine stock has scattered age related storage and handling marks and bruises. The delicate checkering remains well defined. Mechanically excellent.
