Very Fine Cased Gold Inlaid and Game Panel Scene Engraved Cognier of Strasbourg 16 Gauge Side by Side Shotgun Dated 1844 with Second Set of Cape Gun Barrels - Serial no. 4495, 16 gauge, 29 3/8 inch solid rib bbl., brown/gold/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Philippe Cognier (1801-1866), originally of Semur-en-Auxois, is listed at 20 Rue du Dome in Strasbourg in 1840. The Damascus barrels have gold inlaid scroll patterns at the muzzles and breech end, raised molding along the border with the forend, and concave ribs which have silver blade front sights, and “Cognier a Strasbourg” in gold inlay on top, and gold inlaid scroll patterns. The underside

of the shotgun set has “crown/A.B” and “1” marks, and the underside of the rib has “1844” and “4495.” On the cape gun set, the left barrel is smoothbore while the right barrel is rifled, and the rib has two flat folding rear sight notches, the underside of the barrels have “crown/AB” and “2” marks, and the underside of the rib has the year “1844” and the serial number “4494.”
