multi-stage, smoothbore barrel has a post sight on the muzzle, raised ridges that aid in securing the barrel to stock using wrapped cord, and a U-notch rear sight on the flared breech end. The flashpan is attached to the barrel and has a pivoting cover. The metal plates on the breech section have some simple engraving. The stock is painted a red- orange color and has silver plates with ornate scroll and dot patterns at the forend and around the trigger, some bone/antique inlays behind the breech, and curved wrist and butt with separate wood butt. “R.L. Hurston/Ore.” is hand marked on the left sideplate. CONDITION: Very good with some traces of gold finish in protected areas of the barrel, dark brown and gray patina and mild overall wear including pitting. The stock is good with most of the painted finish remaining, mild dings and scratches, mild edge wear, and some old repairs. Mechanically needs work. Provenance: The Tom Lewis Collection. Engraved and Inlaid Miquelet Escopeta with Elaborate Inlaid Stock - NSN, 12 gauge, 30 3/8 inch part octagon bbl., bright/ silver finish, walnut stock. This interesting escopeta has a mix of European and Ottoman/Caucasian styling. The gun was probably assembled/decorated in the late 19th century from earlier components. The barrel has a flared muzzle with a blade front sight, flute and dot accents, and silver band followed
by additional silver bands, golden inlaid designs including an untranslated calligraphic
marking, and raised breech plate with notch sight. The miquelet lock has inlay floral and band designs, as does the iron trigger guard. The paddle but stock would be more at home on a 17th
century wheellock carbine and features extensive engraved inlays, including a profile bust bearded man wearing a turban, bearded man with a gun on the right side of the stock, and a coiled snake and male
lion facing off on the side flat. CONDITION: Very good with gray and brown patina, some mild pitting, aged patina on the bands and inlays, most of one silver
band absent, and general mild overall wear. The stock has a few slivers of inlay absent, crack and some splicing around the lock, partial replacement ramrod
entry pipe, and some dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
