This Springfield Armory M1 Garand rifle was manufactured in December of 1943 and subsequently arsenal modified to M1D configuration. LOT 3348
World War II U.S. Underwood M1 Semi- Automatic Carbine with U.S.M.C. Attributed Modified Rear Sight - Serial no. 1443747, 30 Carbine cal., 18 inch round bbl., parkerized/blue finish, walnut stock. This early production U.S. Underwood M1 Carbine has a U.S. Marine Corps attributed modification performed to the rear sight with a large open V notch cut in place of what was originally a closed peep, as a means of making the sight picture similar to the M1903 Springfield rifle then in service during World War II with the U.S. Marines, and also to improve visibility in low light conditions. Reportedly, the U.S. Marine Corps received approximately 330,000 M1 Carbines during World War II, which is about 5% of the total production between all of the contractors. Most of the U.S. Marine Corps issued examples would have seen hard use in the most important battles of the World War II Pacific Theater, with very few positively identified U.S. Marine Corps issued examples today. The V notch sight modification is considered to be a possible telltale feature linking an M1 Carbine to being a Marine issued example and has been noted on some of the few examples today that have known Marine provenance, making this a desirable example to the discriminating U.S. Military arms collector. Rock Island Auction Company recently sold a Johnson Model 1941 semi-automatic
rifle with similar U.S.M.C. attributed sight modifications (Auction 84, Lot 1591). “UNDERWOOD/6-43” marked barrel. “U” marked blade front and “S” marked Type I two-position flip rear sight, type I barrel band, unmarked push button safety, “U” magazine catch, “U” magazine, “U” trigger housing with Ordnance bomb marked underneath the trigger guard, “U” hammer, “U” blued flat bolt, “U” slide, “P-U” two-rivet handguard, high wood stock, boxed “UEF/GHD” inspection cartouche and crossed Ordnance cannons stamped on the right of the buttstock, and a checkered steel buttplate. Includes oiler and olive drab green canvas sling. CONDITION: Fine with a slightly “salty” look indicative of period beach use and even wear patterns, retaining 60% original parkerized finish with scattered patches of light pitting, freckling and brown colored light corrosion. 85% original blue finish remains on the bolt and magazine. Stock is also fine with attractive original raised grain, scattered dents and scratches, and mostly defined cartouches. Mechanically excellent. Sling is good with a faded look as if it followed this carbine through the war, with some salty corrosion on the metal fittings. As an M1 Carbine with a U.S.M.C. attributed modified V notch rear sight and the desirable “salty” look indicative of possible use in the Pacific Theater of World War II, this would make an excellent addition to any U.S. Military arms collection! Provenance: The Steven Preston Military Collection. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500
