Per the consignor, the engraving was carried out by Ken Hunt, although it is unsigned. Highly figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend and straight grip stock with teardrop flats and Decelerator recoil pad. Includes a leather bound takedown case with canvas cover. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech proved at 18.4/18.3 mm (.724/.720 inches) and measured .726/.723 inches; minimum wall thickness .032/.037 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 3/8 inch drop at heel; 14 1/16 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs 6 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 98% professionally reapplied blue finish, 99% gold inlaid finish, minor handling evidence, some chipping at the rear of the locks, a small crack running from the triggerplate to the action knuckle, a few light handling marks in the wood, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. The case is very fine. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 4,000 - 7,000
   Wood Underlever Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun with Case and Factory Letter - Serial no. 9097, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl.,

The included factory letter confirms the gauge, action type, and barrel length when the gun was completed in 1874 and explains records from this era are sparse. Browned Damascus steel barrels with single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked “J. PURDEY, 314 1/2 OXFORD
STREET, LONDON.” 1981 dated London nitro reproofs, and 2 1/2 inch chambers with extractor. The casehardened bar-in-wood underlever sidelock hammer action displays attractive scroll engraving and features rebounding hammers and double triggers. Nicely figured, multi-point checkered forend with engraved fittings and straight grip stock
with “F/W/H” in inscription oval and engraved blue steel buttplate. Includes a leather bound takedown case with Purdey trade label, two snap caps, cleaning tools, and brass oiler. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both reproofed at .740 inches and measured .745/.742 inches; choke constriction .002/.003

CONDITION: Very fine, showing 95% plus rebrowned finish on the barrels with clear recut markings, nearly all of the reapplied blue on the triggerguard and lower tang, attractive silver patina on the action
and hammers, and overall light handling evidence. The wood is also very fine and appears freshened with a few small handling marks and crisp checkering. The case is fine. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
