CONDITION: Very good as a U.S. issued Gatling
gun, with pleasing and attractive untouched
golden aged patina on the fine brass, gray
patina on the barrels, pitting, and mostly legible
markings. The safety mechanism functions
intermittently, otherwise mechanically functions.
Carriage is very good, with a protective
preservative coating, attractive patina, and
remains sturdy. This is a rare opportunity to
acquire this impressive U.S. Colt Model 1897
Gatling gun. Gatling guns are the “holy grail”
for any gun collector, and make for a grand
centerpiece in any room!
Estimate: 120,000 - 180,000
The gun is mounted on an iron yoke, attached to the Watervliet
Arsenal wooden carriage with correct Archibald wheel hubs;
this is a rare carriage to come across today in any form, as the
wood on many of these carriages simply did not withstand the
test of time due to the harsh conditions they were typically
exposed to. The front surface of the carriage axle housing is
stamped with faint but legible “WATERVLIET ARSENAL” as well
as an “1886” date, “US” and “22”. The carriage is approximately
77 inches across the axle, and the wooden spoked wheels with
iron bands are approximately 54 1/2 inches high. There is a
folding iron seat mounted on the carriage tongue, and wooden
boxes attached to the top of the axle housing on either side of
the gun, and a grease pot hanging by a chain. Reportedly, this
gun was at one time shipped to Camp Connell in Sacramento,
California, as most likely a stopover before being shipped
somewhere in the Pacific.
