LOT 1158
Spectacular and Fresh, New Jersey Militia, David F. Clark Inspected U.S. Colt Cavalry Model Single Action
Army Revolver - Serial no. 113431, 45 Long Colt cal., 7 1/2 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut grips.
This is an absolutely breathtaking, benchmark original example of a David F. Clark inspected U.S. contract Colt
Cavalry Model Single Action Army revolver that was manufactured in 1884 and issued to the State of New Jersey
militia. Per Kopec and Fenn’s “Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers...a Continuing Study,” the New Jersey Militia received two
lots of Cavalry Model revolvers. The first lot was for 30 revolvers issued on July 30, 1885, and the second lot was for
100 revolvers on July 29, 1886 (page 141). The New Jersey Militia revolvers are identified by the “N.J” marking on
the barrel as seen on this example. The other example that comes to mind when speaking of the finest known New
Jersey militia Single Action Army revolvers is close in serial number range with 113278 (August 2024 Auction 4092,
Lot 1155). The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the one-line “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.-” and
the frame has the three-line Colt patent markings followed by a “U.S.” property mark. The U.S. Ordnance Sub-Inspector
during the 1880s period was David F. Clark, and his small “D.F.C.” sub-inspection initials are stamped on the underside
of the barrel, bottom of the frame above the serial number, side of the cylinder and on the left butt of the grip. “P”
proofmarks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and side of the cylinder. Matching visible serial numbers are
on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard, back strap, and cylinder, with assembly number “1231” on the loading gate.
