Historic Pair of Civil War Colt Model 1851
Navy Percussion Revolvers Inscribed for Lieutenant
Colonel William H. Martin of the 93rd Ohio Volunteer
Infantry -A) Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver - Serial no.
134805, 36 cal., 7 1/2 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened/
silver finish, walnut grips. This classic pair of Colt Model 1851
Navy revolvers was manufactured in 1863 during the middle
of the American Civil War. Both revolvers are standard commercial
production revolvers with matching visible serial numbers. Serial number
134924 has “1” on the left side of the trigger guard bow, and 134805 has a
“2” in the same location. 134924 also has “HB” hand
marked on the butt of the grip. They feature
“Wm. H. Martin. Lt Col 93 O.V.I.” inscriptions
down the back straps and “Dayton Ohio”
on the butts for William H. Martin of the
93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Martin is
recorded as enlisting on July 18, 1862.
He was promoted from major to captain
of Company A on February 21, 1863, and
then lieutenant colonel on March 1, 1863.
He resigned on December 2, 1863, due to
wounds received at the Battle of Stones
River and was later given a brevet to
brigadier general on June 8, 1865. A report
in the Dayton Daily Empire on January 9,
1863, indicated Martin had been severely
wounded in the left shoulder at Stones
River, and a second report on January
30, 1863, indicated he had been brought
home to recover.
