As laid out in the included binder of documentation, this historic revolver was
part of Samuel Colt’s personal firearms collection, later part of the Colt Factory
Collection, and then the Museum of Connecticut History at the Connecticut State
Library before being sold in the 1980. The revolver was listed in the 1885 and 1887
collection inventory records and may be one of the “Old Model” pistols from the “In
Col’s Rooms” inventory from 1861. In 1976, Norm Flayderman’s inventory of the Colt
Collection at the Connecticut State Library listed this revolver as no. 245: “Colt 3rd
Model Percussion Hartford Dragoon Revolver; Caliber .44; Serial No. 18136; In Mint
Condition; Marked ‘U.S. DRAGOONS’ Adjacent to Leaf Rear Sight.” The revolver was
purchased by Arnold Marcus Chernoff and then sold to Chet Baranowski who owned
it for several years. The revolver was loaned by Mr. Baranowski to a museum and was
later stored at Collectors Firearms in Texas on his behalf. It was subsequently sold
to John Fielder, Eric Kiersh, back to Danny Clark of Collectors Firearms, then George
Lewis Jr., and comes to us now from a private collection.
