LOT 1014
Desirable Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine - Serial no. 23481, 44 Henry RF cal.,
20 inch round bbl., blue/brass finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1869, this is a solid, honest example of an early
production Winchester Model 1866 saddle ring carbine. When it comes to iconic symbols of America’s westward
expansion and the wilds of the western frontier, there are few firearms more synonymous than the Colt Single Action
Army revolver and the Winchester ‘66 and ‘73, guns that have collectively become tangible symbols of the American
pioneering spirit. A large number of these early production “Yellowboy” carbines saw decades of extensive use in
the American West, leaving surviving examples limited in any condition. This example is a Third Model, with the
serial number marked in block digits behind the trigger on the lower tang. The standard two-line address and King’s
patent marking is on top of the barrel. It is fitted with a blade front sight, integral to the barrel band, a folding two-
leaf rear sight, as well as a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight
grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Very good plus, retaining 50% of the original blue finish on the magazine tube, faint traces of original
nitre blue on the loading gate, a few scattered patches of light pitting, and untouched, attractively aged brass on
the frame with a few minor scratches. The lightly sanded/reoiled wood is fine with a few scattered minor dings and
scratches. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 5,500 - 8,500
LOT 1015
Exceptional and Desirable Remington-UMC 50-Count Box
of 44 Henry Flat Ammunition with Label Marked for Model 1866 Rifle - Constructed from light tan
cardboard, with a black-on-green lid label and a black-on-green seal with white-on-red Remington-UMC
logos. The lid label bears a picture of the 44 Flat Rimfire cartridge, and is marked for 50 rounds, with the
New Haven address below. The seal reads, “.44 HENRY FLAT” on the short sides with the black-on-orange
guarantee label on the underside. The seal is slightly creased on one of the long sides, but the remaining
three are clearly solid and unbroken.
CONDITION: Excellent, with minor wear and scuffs overall. All labels retain strong color and clear markings.
Estimate: 2,500 - 4,000
LOT 1013
Desirable Antique Special Order Winchester First Model 1873 Lever Action
Rifle with Early Production Hand Engraved Serial Number, “Raised Thumbprint” Dust Cover, and Factory Letter - Serial no. 2663, 44 WCF cal.,
24 inch heavy octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1874, this is a fine example of an early production Winchester Model 1873 rifle. These early
‘73s more often than not saw extensive use in the harsh environment of the American West and remain desirable in almost any condition. Only around 30,000
of these first models were produced, making surviving examples quite scarce on the collectors market. The first model receiver has the dual integral dust cover guides on
top of the frame and the “raised thumbprint” dust cover. The included factory letter lists the rifle with a 24 inch octagon barrel and special order set trigger when received at the
warehouse on 16 October 1874, and shipped on 21 October 1874. The rifle correctly lacks caliber markings, as was standard until the introduction of additional calibers in 1879. The
top of the heavier than standard barrel is marked with the two-line address and King’s patent marking. The upper tang has the model marking, and the lower tang has the early
production, hand engraved, small script serial number. It is fitted with a No. 21 German silver blade sporting front sight, an early style elevation adjustable No. 22 notch rear sight with
checkered edges, and a single set trigger. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 50% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel, frame and dust cover, the magazine tube
retaining most of a restored blue finish, 50% plus of the original case colors on the lever and hammer, and 60% of the
original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance mostly a grey patina, the buttplate having a mixture of blue
touch up and grey patina, and a few patches of light pitting on the barrel along with some light cleaning scratches.
The restored wood is also fine with some scattered light handling marks and the metal standing slightly proud.
Half cock not secure, otherwise mechanically functions. A rare opportunity to own an exceptional early production
Winchester first Model 1873 rifle!
