Fine C. J. Jerome Percussion Blunderbuss with Snap Bayonet - NSN, 20
gauge, 14 inch round bbl., brown/casehardened/brass finish, walnut stock. This
c. 1830s blunderbuss has a Birmingham proofed iron barrel with a bore that measures approximately 20
bore towards the breech and flares to 1 1/4 inches at the muzzle and is mounted with a folding sprung bayonet
with a release on the upper tang. The lock has foliate scroll engraving and is signed “C J JEROME”. The brass mounts are
engraved en suite, and the trigger guard features a stylized pineapple finial.
CONDITION: Fine with 50% original brown finish fading to smooth brown patina along the barrel, traces of original case colors mixed with
dark patina on the lock, mostly bright mounts, distinct engraving, and mild wear including some oxidation and pitting. The stock is also fine and has
most of the glossy varnish remaining and some scattered scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent.

Early 18th Century Engraved
British T. Saunders Brass Barrel Flintlock
Blunderbuss - NSN, .80 gauge, 16 3/8 inch part
round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Manufactured c.
late 17th to early 18th century. The maker name “T. SAUNDERS”
is inscribed on top of the barrel, with a “(crown)/TS” maker mark and
London proofs stamped on the breech. Thomas Saunders was apprenticed to Robert Silke and turned over to Thomas Austin in 1675. Free
of the Gunmakers’ Company in 1682, he was elected Master in 1707. He was Gunmaker to Ordnance between c. 1688-1715. The bore is estimated
and measures approximately 1 1/2 inches at the flared muzzle. Floral and border engraving on the barrel, lock, hammer, foliate sideplate, and
buttplate, with an engraved male portrait bust on the wrist plate. The barrel and furniture are brass, with an iron lock (18th century replacement), hammer, barrel tang, sling ring, and trigger, and wooden ramrod.
CONDITION: Good overall, exhibits mostly bright surfaces on the brass, dark brown patina on the iron, light pitting, defined engraving, with insect holes in the refinished stock, a few minor cracks, remaining sound with nice figure.
Mechanically functions. This is a desirable example of a very early British blunderbuss!

LOT 1232
Napoleonic Wars Era British Long Sea Service Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 57 cal.,
12 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This pistol is a standard Long Sea
Service pistol from the early 1800s and features a smoothbore barrel with Ordnance proof marks on the
upper left at the breech, “TOWER” and Georgian cipher marked lock with reinforced cock and interrupted
double line border, brass mounts, an iron belt hook on the left, “IG” and “P” marked on the left stock flat, and
an “1805” dated storekeeper’s mark on the right side of the wrist of the nearly full-length stock. These pistols
were used in the famous naval battles of the Napoleonic Wars, including the famous Battle of Trafalgar, and
remained in service during the War of 1812.
CONDITION: Very good overall with attractively aged patina on the brass mounts, mostly silver-gray patina on
the iron and patches of light brown patina, light pitting, repaired belt hook, moderate dents and scrapes on
the stock, and distinct markings, including the storekeeper mark. Mechanically functions.

Thomson & Co. Brass
Barrel Flintlock Blunderbuss - NSN, 17 gauge,
15 1/8 inch part octagon bbl., bright/brass finish, walnut
stock. Thomson & Co. is recorded as operating at 18 Swan
Street, Minories, in 1779-1803 in “Gunmakers of London 1350-1850”
by Blackmore. The lock is signed “THOMSON/& Co”, and the barrel is signed
“THOMSON & Co LONDON” and has London proof marks. The bore is estimated at
.65 caliber (carbine bore/17 gauge) and flare to approximately 1 1/4 inches at the muzzle.
The stock features raised relief shell pattern carving at the barrel tang, and the trigger
guard has an acorn finial.
CONDITION: Fine with attractive
dark aged patina on the brass barrel
and mounts, gray-brown patina on
the lock, minor oxidation, and mild
overall wear. The stock is very good
and has distinct carving, moderate
dings and scratches, and repairs
below the lock. Mechanically fine.
