The barrel tangs are engraved with martial designs and have integral iron rear sights. The locks have
star and crescent motifs engraved on the sides of the goose neck cocks. A gold inlaid oval shield
engraved “T. DOBSON” surrounded by a stand of arms is located behind each flash pan. The pistols
feature elaborate relief cast solid silver ramrod pipes, side plates, trigger guards, strapped butt caps,
and martial trophy wrist escutcheons. All of the mounts are hallmarked by the silversmith and are
gold washed. The castings have detailed martial trophies and stands of colors and arms. The stand of
arms on the trigger guard finials are surmounted by a crescent. Hallmarks are stamped on the inside of each trigger guard strap. The most distinctive
features of the these exceptional pistols are the extensive and intricate silver wire and silver foliate inlays that cover the pistol stocks. The stylized silver
inlays include chalices, pineapples, and fantastic floral designs with delicately engraved highlights. The silver wire inlays terminate in delicate, stylized
flowers. The large silver inlaid panels make these stocks exceptional. Normally with this style of stock décor there is just scroll silver wire interspersed with
flowers. The level of detail on both the silver inlays and the cast silver furniture is exceptional. Historically, presentation arms for the Ottoman Sultans were
the finest, most elaborate, and highly decorated weapons made. The Colt Dragoon revolvers believed to be manufactured for presentation to the Sultan of
Turkey are acknowledged to be the finest and most elaborately decorated Colt percussion revolvers extant. These very high quality, elaborately engraved
pistols are similar examples of the fine firearms.
CONDITION: Fine overall. The barrel has a silver-gray patina with scattered age spotting, and the relief engraving on forward portions shows wear. The gold
inlays on the muzzle, tangs, and flats are brilliant. The lock plate, cock, and frizzen have a dark brown patina. The lock decorations are crisp. Most of the gold
wash remains on the silver relief mountings. The edges of the relief decorations are sharp and show only light handling wear. The silver inlays retain their
delicate engraved details. The stock shows light to moderate handling wear. There are some slivers of silver wire inlay that are loose or bent. Mechanically
functions. This is an exceptional pair of pistols with unique, gold lined, pivoting flash pans and intricate silver inlays. B) T. Dobson Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 62
