Exhibition Quality Panel Scene
Engraved and Gold Inlaid Nagant/Remington Rolling Block Double Barrel Shotgun - Serial no. 694, 16 gauge, 27 1/4 inch
solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/gold finish, walnut stock. Manufactured c. 1870s-1880s with designs from Emil and Leo Nagant in Liege based
on a similar design as their smaller scale Gendarmerie double barrel pistols. The left side of the frame is marked “BREVET REMINGTON/694”, and the right side
has “BREVET NAGANT/694”. The frame, breech block and trigger guard are exhibition quality panel scene engraved and feature a fox or wolf on the right, a running
stag on the left, and a wild boar on the trigger guard. The Damascus barrels have a single brass bead sight on the solid rib marked “PH. RHEINBERGER IN NEUSTADT
A/H” in gold inlay, and chambers measuring 3 inches with a single extractor. “39900” is marked on the rib covered by the forend and is repeated on the frame along with “863” the Liege
“perron” inspection mark, an “M” and a “crown/V” marking. The “crown/V” is also marked on the inside of the trigger guard, and the bolt retaining the barrels is also marked “863.” The gun features double
triggers, a smooth forearm with horn tip inlay and “LEI POULLAIN” marked on the inside, a scrolling horn grip extension, and a straight grip stock with a cheek piece, 1/2 inch butt extension of a different
species of wood, and a smooth steel buttplate. Sling swivels are mounted to the barrels and butt. Stock measurements: 1 7/8 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 13 7/8 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 4 oz.
CONDITION: Very good with mostly gray patina, light brown and Damascus patterns on the barrels, replacement upper tang screw, and mild wear. The revarnished wood is also very good with some minor repairs and chips,
attractive flame figure, and mild dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.

Stunning Exhibition Grade Panel Scene
Engraved and Gold Inlaid C. Dohling
Wurzburg Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun
- NSN, 18 gauge, 29 3/8 inch solid rib bbl., brown/
casehardened/gold finish, walnut stock. Carl
Dohling (b. 1797) of Wurzburg was active c. 1827-
1869.The smoothbore Damascus barrels have
gold bands at the muzzles and breech, a nickel
silver bead front sight surrounded by a gold inlaid burst design, “C. DOHLING
IN WURZBURG” in gold inlay with a gold inlaid border and floral accents on the
concave rib, and “SILVER/STEEL”, London proof marks, and “18” bore markings
on the undersides. The locks have “C. DOHLING” (right) and “IN WURZBURG” (left) in gold
inlay, and the locks and mounts feature extensive scroll and game scene engraving with gold inlaid
accents. The scenes include a gold eagle on the upper tang, dog pursuing a hare in a lightly wooded
scene with a castle in the background on the right lock, coordinating scene of a dog flushing a
brace of birds on the left, a fox scene on the trigger guard bow, a pair of hares on the heel tang,
and a scene of a hunter resting with his dog after a successful hunt on the butt. There are also gold inlaid birds on the hammers. The trigger guard has a figured
wood grip extension and pierced scrolling tail finial, and the beautifully figured stock has a large cheekpiece on the left and a 13 1/4 inch length of pull. An
included letter indicates this shotgun was owned by the Dr. Harold von Straub whose wife was a member of the Von Brioli family who owned Castle Muhlbach.
Dr. Straub and his family came to the U.S. in the 1950s, and he worked as a mathematician for the National Bureau of Standards. The gun was sold by Dr. Straub to
Sterling Garwood to help pay for a gall bladder surgery in 1952. His son Mike Garwood in turn sold it c. 1989. The consignor noted that the gun was part of a garniture that also included a rifle and pistol.
CONDITION: Very fine with 80% plus of the original brown finish remaining on the barrel, 50% plus of the fading original case colors, bright gold inlays, distinct engraving, detached upper ramrod ferrule, and minimal light age
and storage related wear. The stock is also fine and has glossy varnish, attractive figure, faint checks and hairline cracks, and minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
