The standard barrel length for rifles was 24 inches, and these 16
inch examples remain highly desirable among collectors as there is
no need for an ATF exemption. Along with its desirable barrel length,
this example is also chambered in the desirable .44-40 W.C.F. caliber,
a perfect companion for a Colt Frontier Six Shooter revolver. The top of
the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and patent date, while the
caliber marking is at the breech. The model marking is on the upper tang and the
serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. It is fitted with a German silver blade
front sight, elevation adjustable notch rear sight, the top of the receiver is factory
drilled and tapped for a peep sight with filler screws in place, and a combination peep
sight is mounted on the upper tang. It is mounted with a smooth rifle-length forearm
and straight grip stock with a carbine/military pattern buttplate. Includes a Marlin Fire
Arms Co. card noting the 16 inch barrel and caliber.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 97% plus of the original blue finish, 98% of the vibrant
original case colors, and 98% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate with a few
scattered light handling marks and some light wear on the buttplate. The wood is also
excellent with a few scattered minor dings, scuffs, and a few very light chips at the
top of the buttplate juncture. Mechanically excellent. A rare, high condition, short rifle
variation of the Marlin Model 94 that would be a welcome addition to your collection!
Provenance: The Tom Selleck Collection.
Estimate: 18,000 - 27,500
