Rare and Excellent Special Order Marlin Model 94 Lever Action
Short Rifle in .44-40 W.C.F. with Highly Desirable 16 Inch Barrel -
Serial no. 322667, 44-40 WCF cal., 16 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened
finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1905, this is a very rare and excellent
example of Marlin’s famed Model 94 with a special order factory short barrel
of 16 inches. These shorter barreled Model 94s were highly desirable in the
American West well into the 20th century for their considerable firepower
in a small, easy handling package. An included letter from Marlin historian
William Brophy notes that the 16 inch barrel length is more scarce than
15 or 20 inches across all models. These 16 inch Model 94 rifles are rare as
Marlin customers were generally not inclined to spend extra money on
a special order short barrel, especially when the model was offered in a
standard 20 inch carbine.
