LOT 1028
Special Order Winchester Model 90 Slide Action Rifle with Deluxe Extra Fancy Checkered
Pistol Grip Stock, Gold Plated Trigger and Brass Inlaid Initial Plate - Serial no. 679929A, 22
LR cal., 24 inch octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut checkered stock. This is a beautiful example of an extremely rare
special order deluxe Winchester Model 90 slide action rifle that was manufactured in early 1925 with four special order
features. These deluxe rifles are exceptionally rare especially in a .22 slide action rifle. It was almost the same time, cost and
effort to order a fully embellished and fully engraved rifle versus one with just 2-3 special order features. The four special order features on
this rifle are: 1) extra fancy burl walnut pistol grip stock with brass inlay with initials; 2) full checkered panels on both sides of the pistol grip; 3) a
hard rubber pistol grip cap with the Winchester logo and 4) a gold plated trigger. The rifle itself is a 3rd model that has late two-line Winchester markings
of “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN/CONN. U,S,A,. PAT. JUNE 26. 88 DEC. 6. 91 NOV. 27. 06. MAY 30. 1911” followed by
“---MODEL 90.---.22 LONG RIFLE”. The barrel is fitted with standard late production sheet metal adjustable rear sight and the standard bead front sight. The top of the receiver
ring and breech end of the barrel are both stamped with the oval “WP” proofmark. The stock is an exceptionally nice example of highly figured burl walnut with the left side
showing full figure from the buttplate to the pistol grip, straight grain walnut in the grip area, and the right side showing
approximately 40% full figure, more towards the buttplate. The inlaid brass initial plate is 7/8 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. The
initials “J.M.” have been nicely engraved. It has the standard 12 groove walnut pump handle also made from a dark matching
color plain walnut. The barrel has the special order 3/4 length magazine tube. The front underside edge of the receiver and rear
area of the lower tang carry the matching serial numbers “679929A” and “679929” respectively.
CONDITION: Excellent with 90% plus of the original blue finish overall, edge and high spot wear, and some loss on the slide portion
of the pump handle and lower end of the magazine tube. The lower stock assembly, top of the trigger guard, and rear tang all show some light thinning of the blue finish. The stock and pump handle both retain 98% of the original
Winchester factory varnish with some minor handling marks on the underside of the stock and some minor chipping of the stock varnish around the edges in front of the buttplate. The checkering on the stock is excellent with only
a couple very minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This is outstanding example of a fabulous, extremely high condition Winchester Model 90 slide action presentation rifle.
