Outstanding Rare Antique Casehardened Receiver Winchester Model 1890
Slide Action Rifle in Desirable .22 Short with Factory Letter - Serial no. 55457,
22 RF Short cal., 24 3/8 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock.
This is an extraordinary example of a standard Winchester Second Model 1890
rifle. The included factory letter confirms the caliber “S” and “New” sights, and lists
this rifle as having its serial number applied on December 15, 1897, received in the
warehouse on December 27, 1897, and shipped from the warehouse on April 12,
1898, on order number 7124. Beaded blade front and elevation adjustable
rear notch sights, first style barrel inscription, “22 SHORT” caliber
marking on top barrel flat at the breech, casehardened Second
Model receiver with hidden locking lugs, and standard three-
line maker, model, and patent marking on the upper tang.
12-groove slide handle and plain straight grip stock with
casehardened crescent buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent plus. The barrel, magazine, and
breech bolt retain 97% plus bright original blue finish with
some small scratches and dings, traces of light specks of
oxidation on top of the breech bolt. The receiver has 95%
plus vivid original case colors with some small surface
scratches, and a small patch of surface oxidation and light
pitting on the right side. The wood is also excellent plus with
a few small scattered dings, and almost all of the vibrant original
case colors on the buttplate. Mechanically excellent. Step up to the plate
if you want to own the finest!
