LOT 1457
A) Relief Engraved P. V. Nelson Over/Under Shotgun
- Serial no. 1149, 12 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., black/
brushed bright finish, walnut stock. Peter Nelson started
his career in Gunmaking at Purdey in 1953 at the age of
15 where he learned the trade from Ben Delay and Ernie
Lawrence, some of the best in the business. He set out on
his own in June of 1989, and would go on to create some
of the finest guns ever built. Mr. Nelson only built 84 guns
and rifles total, making them incredibly rare and hard to
find, even more so in a consecutively numbered trio such
as this one. We here at the Rock Island Auction Company
have only had the pleasure to sell just two of his guns prior
to this trio, which is likely one-of-a-kind in its configuration.
Mr. Nelson retired in 2013, with his final project delivered
a few years later, so there is no possibility of new guns
coming to market, meaning that if one desires a set such as
this, do not miss this chance to own it!
All three guns were built on true Boss over/under actions
and were engraved by legendary English Master Engraver
Ken C. Hunt and all share the same game bird hunting
theme, though gun “3” of the trio deviates from the other
two and takes on its own high attractive identity.
All three guns are built with black steel bifurcated lump
demiblock barrels featuring a single bead sight on their
hand matted solid game rib which is marked “P. V. NELSON,
(GUNMAKER), LONDON in fine gold inlay as well as a gold
inlaid “1”, “2”, or “3” at the base indicating their place in the
set. Guns “1” and “2” show carved black leaf scroll engraving
at the breech and down the barrel wings while gun “3”
shows gold inlaid leafy scrolling vines in the same position.
All three guns bear 1993 dated London proof marks and
feature fixed chokes and chambers proofed for 2 3/4 inch
shells with Boss patent ejectors.
