Desirable Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 Fourth Change
Target Double Action Revolver Shipped to L.P. Castaldini of the Springfield
Revolver Club with Factory Letter - Serial no. 387320, 38 S&W Special cal., 4 inch round
bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. Manufactured in 1921, this is a desirable example of a Smith
& Wesson .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 Fourth Change Target revolver documented as having shipped
to one of the leading competitive shooters of the Springfield Revolver Club in Springfield, Massachusetts. The
included factory letter notes that this particular revolver was specially built for L.P. Castaldini of Springfield,
Massachusetts, and was a member of the Springfield Revolver Club. The letter goes on to note some of Castaldini’s
successes in U.S.R.A. competitive shooting, including the 1912 National Prize Match with a score of 461, as well as the
1917 and 1918 Pocket Pistol Matches at 50 yards. The barrel on this example has the Smith & Wesson marking on the left and the caliber marking on
the right. The left side of the frame has the trademark. The matching serial number is marked on the butt and the bottom of the barrel. The cylinder has the number
355973. The matching assembly number is on the frame and crane. The inside of the grips are hand numbered “174195”. It is fitted with a pinned Patridge blade front sight, an
adjustable notch target rear sight, and a pair of period replacement diamond pattern checkered walnut grips with “S&W” monogram medallions.
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 90% of the original blue finish and 60% of the original case colors on the hammer and trigger with some light handling/holster type wear, a few light
scratches, and a cylinder turn line. The grips are excellent with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A very fine short-barrel Smith &
Wesson .38 Military & Police Target revolver documented to a Springfield, Massachusetts competitive shooter!

Scrimshawed Ivory Grips, Case,
and Factory Letter - Serial no.

bbl., blue finish, ivory grips. Manufactured in
1909, this is a very attractive example of a special
ordered Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police Target
Second Change Model of 1905 revolver with rare,
factory scrimshawed grips. The included factory letter list this revolver
with a 6 1/2 inch barrel, target sights including a Lyman ivory beaded blade front and Lyman
ivory bar rear, blue finish, engraved ivory stocks, and a case when paid for by “William P.
Boyuton City Comp.” on 22 November 1909 and shipped to him on 8 December 1909. In
the letter, Roy Jinks goes on to state that he believes the William P. Boyuton (or Boyeston)
mentioned in the letter may have been involved with the city government of Springfield,
Massachusetts. At the time of writing, we were unable to corroborate this claim from Jinks,
however, newspapers from the early 1920s in Alton, Illinois list a William P. Boyuton in
relation to city matters, as well as dealing with the Utility Commission in Springfield, Illinois.
The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, while the left has
the caliber marking, The large Smith & Wesson trademark is on the right of the frame. The
matching serial number is on the butt, rear face of the cylinder, and bottom of the barrel. It is
fitted with a Lyman ivory beaded blade front sight, a Lyman adjustable notch rear sight with
inlaid ivory bar on the rear face, and a very attractive pair of smooth ivory grips with William P.
Boyuton’s initials “W/P/B” scrimshawed on the left panel and “S&W” monogram medallions on both. Includes a factory hardwood case, ceramic jar, screwdriver, bore brushes, and a cleaning rod.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 97% plus of the original blue finish and 90% plus of the vibrant original case colors on the hammer and trigger with some very light edge wear and a cylinder turn line. The grips are excellent with only
the slightest handling marks and crisp scrimshaw work. Mechanically excellent. The case is excellent with only the slightest handling/storage marks.
