Cased Gustave Young Factory Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver
with Ivory Grip - Serial no. 176132, 31 cal., 5 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened/silver finish,
antique ivory grips. This beautiful factory engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver was manufactured
in 1860 while Master Engraver Gustave Young was the primary engraving contractor for Colt, as active in the 1850s and 1860s. The
revolver features Young’s distinctive German-American engraving patterns consisting of extensive foliate scrollwork with floral and shell
accents and beaded background as well as a dog head above the loading lever screw on the left side of the barrel lug, the wolf’s head motif
on the hammer, and the “Saml Colt” presentation inscription in place of the usual barrel address. The factory apostrophe type factory marking
denoting special grips, finish, and/or engraving is marked above or below the matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and back
strap, and additional matching serial numbers are also visible on the barrel, loading lever, wedge, cylinder arbor pin, and cylinder. Dovetailed
blade front sight, hammer notch rear sight, and “COLTS/PATENT” stamped on the left side of the frame in an open panel among the scrolls.
There is a “2” on the left side of the barrel lug at the bottom, the classic stagecoach hold-up scene and patent marking on the cylinder, and
a “B” on the left side of the trigger guard. Fitted with a smooth one-piece ivory grip. Includes a fitted hardwood case, Hicks cap tin, “COLTS/
PATENT” marked dual cavity brass bullet mold without provision for a sprue cutter, and double sided eagle pocket powder flask.
CONDITION: Fine, retains 60% plus bright original high polish blue finish on the barrel, 70% original case colors on the frame, restored
cylinder, smooth gray and brown patina on the balance, 50% original silver plating with proper untouched aged patina on the silver and
exposed brass, minor oxidation, with crisp markings and engraving. Grip is also very fine, with attractive natural tones and grain, a very small
chip at the lower right front corner, minor handling marks, and distinct edges. Mechanically excellent. The case is good, absent key hole plate,
some absent/separated dividers, with age related wear. Accessories are very good. This is a beautiful factory engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket
revolver manufactured prior to the outbreak of the Civil War.
