Engraved, Relief Carved, and Gold and Silver Inlaid Jerry W.
Huddleston Contemporary English Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 54 cal., 8 1/8 inch part octagon bbl., nitre blue/gold/casehardened/silver finish,
walnut stock. This beautiful cased pistol was handcrafted by legendary master craftsman Jerry W. Huddleston (1936-2021) and won the best
engraved handgun award at the Firearms Engravers Guild of America’s convention in Reno in 2007. Huddleston won numerous awards from
FEGA for his stunning muzzleloaders, and his work is rarely publicly available. This pistol is signed “J. W. HUDDLESTON” on the lower edge of the
lock and “J.W.H.” in gold inlay on top of the barrel at the breech and features extensive floral and scroll engraving with inlaid gold blooms and
leaves, gold bands, a rifled barrel with blade and notch sights, silver mounts with detailed cast and engraved patterns, raised relief floral and
scroll carving at the barrel tang, and silver wire and pin inlays along the stock. It comes in a fitted case with a coordinating suite of accessories
with engraved details, silver mounts, gold inlaid “.535” on the ball mold, and a silver oval lid escutcheon inscribed “Custom English Pistol/
Frank Royce Brownell III/by Jerry W. Huddleston” with an engraved border and inlaid floral designs. In an included letter to Mr.
Brownell, Huddleston wrote, “I am very honored that you have purchased my cased 18th century pistol set. I will always
be proud of the fact that one of my creations belongs to you.” He notes he was in part so honored because he used
products from Brownells in many of his creations, including the finishes for this pistol. The set is featured in the article
“The Art of Engraved & Custom Guns” by Tom Turpin in Gun Digest. Turpin wrote: “This cased flintlock pistol is the
work of Jerry Huddleston. Jerry made every item and every piece in this set, including the case, with the exception
of the commercially acquired lock. Even there, he completely redid the lock to meet his requirements. He even cast
all the silver accoutrements, and made the barrel. He also did all the engraving and inlay work.”
CONDITION: Essentially as new with only minimal signs of age and careful handling including some light scrapes on
the frizzen from likely being sparked once by Huddleston before it left his shop. Mechanically excellent. The case and
accessories are excellent with minimal age and storage wear. An incredible work of art.
Provenance: The Frank Brownell Collection.
