LOT 3023
Rare Antique Special Order Casehardened Winchester Deluxe Model
1892 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter - Serial no. 22889, 32 WCF cal.,
24 inch octagon bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured
in 1894, this is a very scarce example of a special ordered, casehardened
Winchester deluxe Model 1892 rifle. The included factory letter with this
rifle lists it in .32 caliber with an octagon barrel, plain trigger, casehardened
finish, and a fancy checkered stock when it was received at the warehouse on
23 January 1894, and shipped the following day in order number 8115. The
records further note that it was returned to the warehouse on 7 May 1912 as
order number 41955. According to knowledgeable collectors, only 371 out
of the first 290,000 Model 1892s were made with a casehardened receiver, of
which, only 137 were rifles, with the remainder being saddle ring carbines.
The Model 1892 in general is rarely seen in special order and deluxe configurations, due in a large part to generally
being viewed as a working gun that could easily be paired with a Colt Single Action Army revolver, having many
common calibers. As noted above, this particular rifle was returned to the factory in 1912, at which time it received
factory oval proofs on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The top barrel flat is marked with the standard two-
line address and the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang has the two-line trademark and patent date, while
the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver. The left side of the lower tang is marked “47 XX”, with “47”
repeated in the stock inlet and inside the buttplate. It is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight and an elevation
adjustable No. 24 notch rear sight. It is mounted with a finely figured, H-pattern checkered forearm and straight grip
stock with a crescent buttplate.
