The engraving prominently features a cowboy, steer, and train scene on the left of the receiver, with the right of the receiver
having a lever action armed cowboy and a pair of wolves. Both of the scenes are surrounded by extensive, American style scrollwork,
which continues onto the forearm cap, takedown collar, and buttplate tang. There are thin engraved bands of gadrooning at the
muzzle and breech of the barrel, as well as a flourish of scrollwork in front of the caliber marking. The top barrel flat has the two-line
address and the caliber marking at the breech. The two-line patent date marking and serial number are on the lower tang, while
the upper tang has the model marking. It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight, a folding ladder rear sight, and a single set
trigger. It is mounted with a very finely figured, multi-point checkered forearm and pistol grip stock with an ebony insert at the base
of the grip and a crescent buttplate. Included with the rifle is an imitation ivory plate shaped like the left side of the receiver of the
rifle which is scrimshawed with the same engraved scene and scroll as on the rifle, with the back side fitted with a magnet.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 99% of the high polish blue finish, as well as 99% plus of the French grey, case colors, and nitre blue
with only the slightest handling evidence. The upgraded deluxe wood is also excellent with only the slightest handling evidence and
crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The scrimshawed ivory plate is also excellent. This Winchester Model 1886 in .50 Express
would make a fantastic display and conversation piece!
Provenance: The Frank Brownell Collection.
