Attractive Factory Engraved Winchester
16 Gauge Model 21 Grand American
Double Barrel Shotgun with Case - Serial
no. 13145, 16 gauge, 28 inch vent rib bbl.,
blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured
between 1946 and 1960. Built with blued
Winchester Proof Steel marked barrels with
red bead front and steel-bead sights on
the matted flat vent rib, 3 inch wedges of floral
scroll engraving at either breech, jewelled flats,
chokes marked “IMP CYL”/”MOD”, and 2 3/4
inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The
barrels are fitted to a blued boxlock action
which displays beautiful Grand American
pattern engraving consisting of near full
coverage floral scrollwork surrounding four
gold inlaid game scenes. The left side shows a
setter in a field scene, the right has a pointer
in a field scene, the underside shows a pair
of pheasant cocks in a field scene, and a bust
of a dog on the trigger guard all rendered
in fine detail with extra depth around each
animal. The gun features a gold single
selective trigger, jeweled watertable, and
tang mounted automatic safety. The gun
is mounted with a stunningly figured and
fancy 21-B pattern fleur-de-lis checkered and
carved beavertail forend with ebony tip inlay and
engraved iron and rotary latch release as well as a
straight grip stock with blank gold inscription oval
and leather covered recoil pad. Included is a copy of
a letter from Tony Galazan of Connecticut Shotgun
Manufacturing Co. attesting to the authenticity of
the gun as well as stating his belief that the gun
was engraved at the factory by John Kusmit, a belief
shared by the writer. Also includes a leather flat
case with Winchester trade label containing a nickel
oiler and snap caps. Barrel and stock measurements
(R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the
breech .665/.664 inches; choke constriction
.008/.018 inches; minimum wall thickness
.036/.032 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb;
2 3/16 inch drop at heel; 14 1/4 inch length
of pull; weight 7 lbs. 3 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine overall, retaining 99%
professionally restored blue finish, slight
plum hue on the fences, minor handling
evidence, some wear on the recoil pad,
and sharp checkering/carving on the wood.
Mechanically excellent. The case is very
fine with light storage/transit wear. A great
opportunity to own a classic high grade
American double!
