Factory Engraved and Gold Inlaid Pair of John Rigby & Co. Self-
Opening Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns with Case -A) John
Rigby & Co. Sidelock Shotgun - Serial no. 18456, 12 gauge, 28 inch
solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened/gold finish, walnut stock. John Rigby
& Co. have been maker’s of some of the world’s finest sporting arms
for 250 years since their founding in 1775. Every gun is hand built
by skilled artisans and craftsmen with this pair being a fine example
of their magnificent quality of work. Each of the fantastic guns in
this pair was built with blued steel chopperlump barrels featuring
a single brass bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is
signed “J. Rigby & Co. London. England.” along with a flourish of scroll
engraving around a gold inlaid “1” or “2”, a single band of engraving
at the breech, 1989 dated London proof marks on the flats, and 2 3/4
inch chambers with automatic ejectors. The barrels of each gun are
fitted to a vibrantly casehardened sidelock action which displays highly
attractive extensive floral scroll engraving surrounding gold inlaid
“John Rigby & Co.” signatures on either lockplate before extending to
the blued toplever which shows a gold “1” or “2”, the trigger guard, and
the lower tang which shows the serial number in gold. The guns are
both equipped with a Holland & Holland type self-opening mechanism
under the forend, double triggers, a right hand rolled trigger guard, gold
centerlined cocking indicators on the lockplates, and a tang mounted
automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” indicator.
