Early Production Smith & Wesson .357
Registered Magnum Double Action
Revolver with Box - Serial no. 46378,
357 Magnum cal., 6 1/2 inch solid rib bbl.,
blue finish, walnut grips. This particular Registered
Magnum with low reg. no. 157 is one of 1,439 manufactured from 1935-1939
with a 6 1/2 inch barrel, based on data provided in the article “Registered
.357 Magnums” by Roy Jinks in the 2010 Smith & Wesson Collectors Journal.
These Registered Magnums were custom built and hand fitted to special
ordered specifications, whether from a retailer or an individual customer, and
were then individually registered to the owner by the vice president of the
company, D.B. Wesson. These revolvers were the first production revolver
chambered in the new and very powerful .357 Magnum cartridge and thus,
were very popular at the time among anyone that felt they needed an edge should a gunfight occur. This early production example is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, an adjustable square notch rear
sight, grip adaptor, and S&W medallion checkered grips. Matching serial numbers appear on the butt, cylinder, and ejector shroud. The correct period S&W box is numbered to a different gun. Comes with the
“Caution” leaflet and bore brush.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, retaining 97% original blue finish with some scattered handling wear and crisp grip checkering. Mechanically excellent. The box is very good. An excellent early production
example of the iconic S&W .357 Registered Magnum revolver.
