Factory Engraved Charles Lancaster Backaction Hammer Double Rifle in 470 Express - Serial no. 5591, 470 cal., 28 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1885 per the information on page 121 of Nigel Brown’s “British Gunmakers Volume One: London”. Blued steel barrels with a blade front and two leaf (one standing, one folding) rear sights on the solid matted rib, “CHARLES LANCASTER. 11. PANTON St. HAYMARKET, LONDON.” and “NON-FOULING SMOOTH OVAL BORE RIFLING.” marked on the left and
right barrels respectively, and chambers with a single extractor. The flats are marked with period London proofs listing the load as 75 grains of cordite
under a 500 grain bullet. The casehardened Jones underlever receiver with backaction locks displays near full coverage floral scroll engraving and is signed “CHARLES LANCASTER
PATENT.” on either side and “CHARLES LANCASTER/LONDON” on either lockplate. The rifle features rebounding hammers, dovetailed firing pins, bar safeties on both locks, and double triggers. Nicely figured, multi-point checkered forend with engraved fittings and round knob pistol grip stock with shadowline cheekpiece, blank silver inscription oval, and a red rubber recoil pad. Length of pull 14 7/16 inches. Weight 11 lbs. CONDITION: Very fine as professionally refurbished, retaining 99% blue finish, flashes of original case colors with the balance an attractive grey patina, some pitting beneath the blue in areas, minor handling evidence, and sharp recut checkering on the wood. Isaac Hollis & Sons Jones Underlever Backaction Hammer Double Rifle in .577 Black Powder Express with Case - Serial no. 58566, 577 BPE cal., 26 7/16 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Blued steel barrels with a low blade front and three leaf (one standing, two folding) rear sight on the matted solid rib which is marked “AMMUNITION (577) EXPRESS. 3in CASE” ahead of the rear sight and “I. HOLLIS & SONS. LONDON.” behind the rear sight, correct Birmingham black powder proofs, and chambers with single extractor. The casehardened Jones underlever receiver with backaction locks show light line engraving with “I. HOLLIS &
SONS.” signed on both lockplates. The rifle features rebounding hammers and dual triggers. Well-figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with horn tip inlay and pistol grip stock
with raised cheekpiece, rear sling stud, blank inscription oval, horn grip cap, and steel heel and toe plates. Includes a modern oak and leather takedown case with canvas cover, leather cartridge wallet, oiler, and cleaning tools. Length of
pull 14 5/16 inches. Weight 11 lbs. 6 oz. CONDITION: Fine overall, retaining 70% old reapplied blue finish, attractive grey patina with flashes of case colors, some pitting on the metal, thinning along the barrels, mild handling
evidence, and well-defined checkering on the stock and forend. The case is excellent. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000

Gye & Moncrieff Backaction Hammer Double Rifle with Case - Serial no. 1401, 500 Black Powder Express cal., 25 7/8 inch solid rib bbl., blue/bright finish, walnut stock. Blued steel
barrels with a low beaded blade front and a fixed rear sights on the matted solid rib, marked “CONSTRUCTED BY MESSrs GYE & MONCRIEFF” on the left and “St. JAMES’S STREET, LONDON.” on
the right, period London black powder proofs on the flats, and chambers with a single extractor. The receiver and backaction locks have been polished bright and are marked the same as the
barrels on either lockplate. The rifle features double triggers, non-rebounding hammers, and hammer safeties. Nicely figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend and pistol grip stock with horn
grip cap, blank silver inscription oval, raised cheekpiece, and blued heel and toe plates around the checkered butt. Included is an oak & leather takedown case featuring an “RWL” marked initial plaque
on the exterior of the lid and containing a nickel oiler and a set of cleaning tools. Length of pull 14 7/8 inches. Weight 10 lbs. 1 oz.
CONDITION: Fine, retaining 95% reapplied blue finish, polished finish on the action, and light handling evidence. There is a crack at the rear of the forend, otherwise the wood is very fine with a few
minor marks and sharp recut checkering. The case is very good with mild scuffs and a repaired strap. Mechanically excellent.
