   This third model rifle is fitted with a dovetail German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable rear sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line Winchester New Haven address/King’s improvement patent dates legend ahead of the rear sight and “38 W.C.F.” at the breech. The cartridge elevator is marked “38 CAL.” The upper tang is marked “MODEL 1873.” As noted, Ulrich signed his work behind the trigger. Ahead
of the trigger is the number 11 inside a
triangle. The serial number is marked in script behind the lever catch. The checkered forearm and pistol grip stock are fancy figured XXX deluxe walnut. The pistol grip has an ebony insert. The buttstock is fitted with a special order steel shotgun buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked “XXX 1034 38 S.” The assembly number “1034” along with the caliber designation “38” is repeated on the stock inlet. The back of the buttplate is stamped with the number “34.” CONDITION: Very fine as factory refurbished, retaining 70% of the blue finish with a smooth brown patina on
the balance and 95% plus of the case colors remaining on the hammer and lever. Traces of nitre blue remain on
the loading gate. The remaining metal surfaces retain 98% of the nickel plating. Both side plates show flawlessly executed scrollwork and detailed elk and hound engraving. The wood is also very fine with a number of minor handling marks and crisp recut checkering. Mechanically excellent. A highly attractive John Ulrich signed embellished Model 1873 rifle.
