 LOT 590
Rare Experimental Smith & Wesson Performance Center Semi-Automatic Competition Pistol in .356 TSW with Red Dot Sight - Serial no. XPX0020, 356 TSW cal., 5 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut grips. Offered here is an experimental,
and possibly one off, pistol
created by the Smith & Wesson
performance Center around
what would become the Model 3566. It
is chambered in the ill-fated .356 TSW cartridge. The .356 TSW
was designed to bridge the gap between major and minor
power factors in IPSC competitive shooting while still having
lower recoil than .45ACP, the standard for major power factor. Smith & Wesson
met all the requirements for their new pistol to be able to be used, however
the governing body for competitive shooting made a change to the rules the
following year to set the minimum bore diameter for major power factor to .40.
Due to the poor marketing outside of the competitive world, this rule change
effectively killed the new powerhouse cartridge. The pistol itself is merely marked
with the serial number on the left side of the frame. It is fitted with a
muzzlebrake, custom lightened slide with the rear sight milled off and
safety hole plugged, special frame mounted safety, custom beavertail,
and a small “gas pedal” style thumb rest behind the slide release.
The frame is checkered on the front and backstraps with an integral
magazine well, and side mounted optics mount holding a Tasco ProPoint red dot sight.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 95% plus original blue finish with some minor handling marks
and general wear from use. Grips are very fine with a cutout in the left grip and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Sight operational. Don’t pass up this opportunity to own this nearly forgotten piece of competition shooting history!
Provenance: The Jon M. Maxwell Collection.
Estimate: 3,000 - 5,500

1/4 inch round bbl., matte finish, synthetic grips. Designed by Lin “Trapper” Alexiou of Fraser, MI, the Personal Protection Systems Scorpion took a Smith & Wesson Model 39 and performed a radical “remanufacturing”.

The left side of the slide bears the Personal Protection Systems Ltd. with the conversion number on the right side and “Scorpion”. The left side of the frame is marked “Trapper Gun”. Includes a fitted hardwood case numbered to match gun, 22 flat nose 9 mm cartridges, and two extra magazines. CONDITION: Excellent as professionally upgraded by Lin Alexiou, with some handling marks, and two hairline cracks on the left side of the sight. Mechanically excellent. Case is very fine. LOT 593
Rare Experimental Smith & Wesson Semi-Automatic Competition Pistol
with Red Dot Sight - Serial no. XPX0014, 9 mm Luger cal., 4 1/2 inch round bbl., stainless finish, walnut grips. Offered here is an experimental, and possibly one
off, competition pistol from the Smith & Wesson Performance center. The slide
is manufactured without sights (the rear sight location
is milled down for weight saving), weight relief cuts all
around the slide, and is fitted with a compensator. The
frame bears the pistol’s only marking, a lone serial number,
and is fitted with an optics mount holding a Tasco Propoint red
dot, checkered walnut grips, checkered front and backstraps, integral magwell, and beavertail. Included with the pistol is an extra magazine.
CONDITION: Excellent overall, with some typical wear from use,
some minor pits on top of the slide, and crisp grip checkering.
Mechanically excellent. Sight is operational. This would make an
excellent addition to any Smith & Wesson or prototype
firearm collection!
Provenance: The Jon M. Maxwell Collection.
Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
LOT 594
Rare and Desirable Prototype Smith & Wesson 4006 Semi-Automatic
Pistol - Serial no. X526, 40 S&W cal., 4 inch round bbl., stainless finish,
plastic grips. Offered here is one of, if not the only, prototype of the
Smith & Wesson Model 4006. This was slated to be the flagship model of
their third generation of S&W’s iconic double action/single action series
of handguns. Shortly after it’s January 17, 1990 release date, the model was selected by California State Police to be their standard service pistol. The 4006 would remain, albeit with the eventual addition of a light rail, in service with CSP until 2011. Fitted with white dot blade front and fully adjustable rear sight with protective ears giving
the pistol its distinctive silhouette. The left side of the slide has the S&W address
while the frame is marked on the left with the model and “X” prefix prototype serial number. Includes a generic hard case and an extra magazine.
CONDITION: Excellent, with some light handling marks, some light holster wear,
and a couple spots of minor discoloration on the frame from age. Grips are very fine with a couple dings and slightly softened grip checkering. Mechanically excellent.
This would make a very welcome addition to any Smith & Wesson collection! Provenance: The Jon M. Maxwell Collection.
Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500
