Documented Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle Chambered for “6 M/M .308 CASE” Built For Famed Outdoorsman, Author, and Editor of Field & Stream Magazine Warren Page - Serial no. 322902, 6 mm cal., 26 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1955. Fitted with Lyman 77R front and 48 peep rear sights. The left side of the barrel is marked with the Winchester address and model marking with the caliber hand stamped on the top near the breech. “WP” proofs are marked on the barrel and receiver. The straight tang receiver is marked with the Winchester trademark on the left and serial number on the right ring. Mounted in a straight grain walnut pistol grip target stock with accessory slots on the underside of the forearm, sling loops, and blued steel checkered buttplate. The rifle is discuss and pictured on page 305 of “The Rifleman’s Rifle” by Roger Rule, in which he states that this rifle was built as a “tool room” rifle for outdoor author Warren Page to his caliber specifications and also that it is part of the author’s collection. Warren Page amassed a large following in the gun writing world as the editor of Field and Stream magazine. He was also an avid outdoorsman and competition shooter, founding the National Benchrest Shooting Championship. It is likely, given the prevalence of 6 MM cartridges in benchrest shooting, that Page used this rifle in those early championships. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 97% plus original blue finish with limited handling marks and an attractive plum coloration on the barrel. Stock is very fine with some dings and scratches and a hairline crack at the left side of the forend. Mechanically excellent. Documented Special Order Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade Bolt Action Carbine in .375 Holland & Holland Magnum Photographed in “The Rifleman’s Rifle” - Serial no. 57236, 375 H&H magnum cal., 20 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1946. Fitted with ramped, hooded, beaded blade front an elevation adjustable rear sights. The barrel
is marked with the model and caliber on the left side with the Winchester address on the right. “WP” proofs are stamped on the barrel and receiver. The cloverleaf receiver is marked with the Winchester trademark on the left and the serial number on the right receiver ring. The floorplate is marked “-SUPER GRADE-”. Mounted in a multipoint checkered walnut pistol grip stock with contrasting forend cap, hard rubber grip cap, special order left handed cheekpiece, and a red rubber recoil pad. This rifle is pictured on page 242 and 243 of “The Rifleman’s Rifle” by Roger C. Rule and noted on page 244 as a special order carbine that is part of the author’s collection. CONDITION: Very fine as professionally restored, retaining 97% plus refinished blue finish with limited handling marks and crisp stock checkering. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Roger C. Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade Bolt Action Rifle in Desirable .458 Winchester Magnum with Factory Box - Serial no. 369663, 458 Win Mag cal., 25 inch round bbl., blue finish, highly figured Monte Carlo walnut stock. Manufactured in 1956. Fitted with ramped, hooded, beaded blade front and Winchester adjustable sporting rear sights. The left side of the barrel is marked with the Winchester address, model, and caliber. “WP” proofs are marked on the barrel and receiver. The receiver is marked with the Winchester trademark on the left and the serial number on the right of the receiver ring and topped off with a Lyman Model 48 peep sight. The floorplate is marked “- SUPER GRADE-”. Mounted in a multipoint checkered straight grain walnut pistol grip stock with contrasting forend cap, sling loops, blued steel grip cap, Monte Carlo comb, and Winchester red rubber recoil pad. Includes original matching number box with end label marked “SUPER GRADE” and “High Comb Monte Carlo Stock” and a leather sling. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 99% plus original blue finish with limited handling marks and pitting under the finish on the bolt handle. Stock is very fine with a few dings and scratches, some forend cap separation, and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Box is very fine. Estimate: 3,500 - 5,500
LOT 1574 Scarce 7mm Pre-World War II Winchester Model 70 Bolt Action Rifle - Serial no. 28103, 7 mm cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, checkered walnut stock. Manufactured in 1939 (dated on the barrel under stock), this Model 70 rifle features the scarce and highly desirable 7 mm caliber and is equipped with a hooded ramp blade bead front and adjustable rear sporting sights with the receiver being drilled and tapped for a scope and mount. Features a one-piece checkered American walnut pistol grip stock with sling swivels, hinged floor plate, and black checkered steel buttplate. The right side of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address/ patent information, and the left side is marked with the Winchester trademark, model and caliber designation. CONDITION: Excellent with 97% original finish overall. There are a few minor nicks and light edge wear on the trigger guard, in addition to some very slight thinning at the muzzle. The buttplate also exhibits some minor to moderate thinning of the finish on the heel and toe. The stock has been freshened and remains very fine with a few overall minor scratches/pressure dents. Mechanically excellent, with clear markings.
