Outstanding Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1885 High Wall
Takedown Schuetzen Rifle with Winchester A5 Scope - Serial no. 113537, 32-40 WCF cal., 30 inch
octagon bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1913, this is an outstanding example of a special
order deluxe Winchester Model 1885 rifle in takedown Schuetzen configuration. These rifles were incredibly
popular among early 20th century competition shooters, especially in this configuration and chamber for this cartridge, which
was initially developed as a black powder match-grade round. The top flat of the No. 4 weight octagon
barrel is marked with the two-line address and patent dates, partially obscured by the front scope block. The caliber
marking is offset on the upper left flat of the barrel at the breech and repeated on the bottom along with various proofs under the forearm, and the “4” barrel weight marking just in front of the forearm. There is a Winchester factory oval proof on top of the receiver. The upper tang has the three-line patent and trademark information, and the lower tang is marked with the serial number. The left side of the lower tang is marked with “1587”, which is scored out, and “591”, which is repeated in the stock inlet, front face of the takedown collar,
and the rear face of the forearm. “1587” is repeated on the stock under the buttplate and on the inside of the buttplate. These assembly numbers indicate that the configuration of this rifle may have been changed slightly prior to leaving the warehouse. The barrel is fitted with
a globe “wind gauge” front sight, a blank in the rear sight dove tail, along with two scope block fitted with Winchester factory rings bearing the 1907 patent dates on
the right side. The rear ring has knobs for windage and elevation adjustment. A desirable Winchester A5 scope is fitted in the rings. There is a mid-range peep sight mounted
on the upper tang and the receiver is fitted with double set triggers and an ornate serpentine finger spur lever. It is mounted with a nicely figured, H-pattern checkered, Schnabel
tip forearm with an ebony insert and a mounting point for a palm rest that is fitted with a disk-shaped hardwood palm rest. The very finely figured American Schuetzen pattern stock has a checkered pistol grip with hard rubber grip cap, a large cheek piece for a right handed shooter, and is fitted with a blued Swiss style buttplate.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 95% plus of the original blue finish with some light flaking on the takedown collar and top edges of the receiver, and some very light edge wear near the muzzle. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The scope optics are clear and the reticle crisp. An outstanding Winchester Model 1885 takedown rifle in a very desirable Schuetzen configuration!
