Desirable Cased Pair of Silver Mounted Robert Wogdon
Flintlock Dueling Pistols -A) Wogdon Dueling Pistol - NSN, 28
bore cal., 9 1/4 inch octagon bbl., brown/casehardened/gold/silver
finish, walnut stock. These pistols were exhibited at the NRA in 2004
and were manufactured c. 1780 by famed dueling pistol maker
Robert Wogdon (1734-1813), arguably the most renowned of the
English dueling pistol makers. A pair of Wogdon & Barton pistols
were famously used in the Burr-Hamilton duel. The lightly swamped,
octagonal barrels are smoothbore and have London proof marks on
the undersides, feature dovetailed silver blade front sights and gold
vent liners, and are signed “Wogdon LONDON” on top. The breech
ends of the barrels and front of the standing breeches have bands
of beadwork engraving. The barrels are likely slightly bent downwards
to be common on Wogdon pistols in an attempt to correct duelists firing over their marks. The standing
breeches also incorporate fixed notch rear sights and floral engraving. The locks are signed “Wogdon” in gold inlaid ovals and have sliding half-cock safety latches and stepped, pointed tails. The locks are fired using single set triggers without visible adjustment screws. The mounts are solid silver and includes classic acorn finials on the trigger guards along with the initials “AW” in script inscribed on the bows and hallmarks including “MB” silversmith’s mark inside, the tangs respectively numbered “1” and “2”, a figure of Britannia on the pommels, and pierced scroll pattern side plates involving a pineapple and sword. The full-length stocks have flat sided butts. The ramrods have horn tips. The oak case has green baize lining and a leather powder flask.
CONDITION: Fine overall with dark older re-browned finish on the barrel, bright gold inlay and mottled gray patina on the lock, attractive aged patina and distinct designs on the exceptional solid silver mounts, smooth oiled finish, and minor overall wear, including some slight dings and scratches on the stock. Mechanically fine. The case is fine and has mild age and storage related wear, one compartment lid missing its lifting loop.
