Cased Pair of Finely Engraved Gold and Silver Inlaid Large Caliber Over/Under Flintlock Pistols by Samuel Brunn
-A) S. Brunn Double Barrel Flintlock Pistol - NSN, 69 cal., 9 1/4 inch round bbl., brown/gold/casehardened/blue/silver finish, walnut grips. Samuel Brunn was among the most accomplished English gun and sword makers in the United Kingdom at the end of the flintlock era in the late 18th century and the early 19th century and was a gunmaker to the Prince of Wales (later King George IV). These .69 caliber (14 bore) officer’s pistols from c. 1805-1820 feature over/under smoothbore barrels of Damascus with London proofs on the right,
a gold blade front sight, gold vent liners, and gold inlaid banner on the breech end of the upper barrel inscribed “S BRUNN/56 CHARg CROSS LONDON” along with a gold inlaid band. The locks have gold inlaid classical martial designs and “S-BRUNN” at the centers, foliate engraving, and sliding half-cock safeties. The pistols have double triggers, blued trigger guards with engraved borders and martial trophies, and checkered “saw-handle” grips with inlaid silver pommel trim and silver inlaid pommel escutcheons inscribed with a coat
of arms showing a crowned demi-eagle over a torse. A note inside
the case indicates this is the crest of the Wingfield family, Viscounts Powerscourt. Richard Wingfield, 5th Viscount Powerscourt (1790-1823) was an Anglo-Irish representative peer who lived at the family’s large Powerscourt Estate, in County Wicklow, Ireland, and hosted
King George IV in 1821. The pair comes in a fitted
hardwood case with a Samuel Nock trade label inside the
lid, green baize lining, and several accessories.
CONDITION: Very fine with 95% plus of the re-browned
finish and distinct Damascus patterns along the barrels,
bright original gold inlays, original case colors in the
protected areas, 75% plus original blue finish, attractive
aged patina on the silver, and generally minor age and
storage related wear. The stock is also very
fine with crisp checkering and minor marks.
Mechanically fine. The case and accessories
are very good with minor storage wear.
B) S. Brunn Double Barrel Flintlock
Pistol - NSN, 69 cal., 9 1/4 inch round bbl., brown/gold/casehardened/blue/silver
finish, walnut grips.
CONDITION: Very fine with 95% plus of the
re-browned finish and distinct Damascus
patterns along the barrels, strong case
colors in the protected areas, 50% original
blue, bright original gold inlays, attractively
aged patina on the silver, and
generally minor overall age
and storage related wear.
The grip is also fine and
has crisp checkering and
minor wear mostly by
the locks. Mechanically
fine. Overall, this is a
very attractive and very
scarce pair of over/
under flintlock pistols
by royal gunmaker
