 LOT 3409
Excellent Documented Bavarian Unit Marked “1911” Dated Unaltered DWM Model 1908 Military Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol with Matching Magazine and “12” Dated
Holster, Photographed in “Central Powers
Pistols” by Jan Still - Serial no. 260e, 9 mm Luger cal., 4 inch round bbl., blue finish, checkered walnut grips. Manufactured prior to World War I, this excellent DWM Model 1908 Military Luger shows a number of early features that would be eliminated from the German-issued Luger during the course of the war.
This exact pistol and holster are photographed in Jan C. Still’s book “Central Powers Pistols” on pages 46 (Figure 11) and
300 (Figure 117c). Unit marking “B.5.A.r.3.89.”
stamped on the front grip strap, which signifies
the Bavarian 5. Feldartillerie-Regiment (Field
Artillery), 3. reitende (mounted) batterie, waffe (weapon) number
89. The lot is also accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from noted author Jan C. Still’s family verifying it was in his personal collection. “1911” dated chamber with the “DWM” monogram on the front toggle link, the
back strap is smooth correctly with no provision for stock attachment, the frame is solid with no cuts for a hold-open device, and the serial numbers are
in the “commercial” pattern. The absence of the hold-open alteration is
noteworthy, as most Model 1908 Military Lugers seen today were arsenal retrofitted to accept the device. “Crown/gothic letter” proofs stamped
on the right of the extension, with imperial eagle firing proofs on the extension, barrel and breech block. With straw finished small parts, niter blue
pins, springs, and grip screws, and checkered walnut grips. All matching visible
serial numbers on the various components including the interiors of both grip panels. Both of
the included magazines are nickel finished with walnut bases, one is matching numbered “260/e” on its base, the other is numbered
“2184/e”. Includes a brown leather holster maker marked “M. ZOTZ/SATTLER/LANDAU/’/PFALZ” above “12” date above “AWM/16/12” and containing a takedown tool and the extra magazine.
CONDITION: Excellent, retains 97% original blue finish with some minor finish loss at some of the leading edges and some light freckling. 75% original straw colors remain on the small components. Grips are also excellent with a few light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Holster is very fine with some minor age related surface cracking, light handling marks, and supple leather.
Provenance: The Jan C. Still Collection; Property of a Gentleman.
Estimate: 7,500 - 12,000
