LOT 1072
Two 50-Count Colt Lightning DA Picture Boxes of .38 Long
Colt Cartridges, One by U.M.C. and One by Winchester -
Included in the lot are two rare picture boxes of .38 Long Colt
cartridges, one manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms
Co. and one by Union Metallic Cartridge Co., two of the biggest
cartridge manufacturers in the business at the time. Both are
made of card stock, with the Winchester box having green
labeling with black text and the U.M.C. box having orange
labeling with black text. Both boxes display imagery of Colt’s
Model 1877 Lightning double action revolver on the lids and
explain that the cartridges are specially adapted for the revolver.
The Winchester box retains its factory seal while the U.M.C.
box is open, but both appear to contain the full compliment of
cartridges.
CONDITION: The U.M.C. box is fine with moderate wear, a small
piece absent from a side panel of the lid, and a few absent
pieces of the labeling. The Winchester box is very fine with intact
factory seal and very light handling/storage wear. These boxes
would be the perfect addition to a Colt Model
1877 revolver display!

Greg Lampe
Collection.

LOT 1070
Antique Colt “Sheriff’s” Model 1877 Lightning Ejectorless
Double Action Revolver with Very Scarce 2 Inch Barrel,
Attractive Silver Mounted Holster Rig, and Factory Letter - Serial
no. 3104, 38 cal., 2 inch round bbl., nickel finish, hard rubber grips.
This is a rare example of a Colt Lightning revolver with a 2 inch barrel and without an
ejector, commonly referred to as a “Sheriff’s Model”. Though the nicknames “Rainmaker”,
“Lightning”, and “Thunderer” are all excellent marketing material, they were not names ever
actually used by Colt. These nicknames are believed to have been coined by the famous
Colt distributor, Benjamin Kittredge, who is also believed to have been responsible for giving
the Single Action Army its iconic nickname, “Peacemaker”. This specific example is correctly marked
simply “COLT” on the right side of the rare and desirable 2 inch barrel. There are small British proofs
in between each chamber of the cylinder. Per our consignor, the revolver came out of South Africa.
The left side of the frame has the three-line patent dates marking and “38CAL” is on the left rear of
the trigger guard. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard,
back strap, and rear face of the cylinder (“104”). It is fitted with a German silver blade front sight, frame
top groove rear sight, and a pair of checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colts at the tops. The
accompanying factory letter states the revolver was shipped to Colt’s London Agency, London, England, on
October 15, 1877 in .38 caliber, with nickel finish, hard rubber stocks, and barrel length not listed. This was
a 30 gun shipment. Included with the revolver is a cartridge belt and holster with silver floral mounts on
the holster and a large Mexican eagle with snake within an oval between the two buckles.
CONDITION: Very good, retaining 30% of the original nickel finish and the balance a mixture of brown
and grey patinas, typical of a revolver that saw frontier use, whether the American West or one of the
many frontiers of the British Empire. The grip is fine with a minor crack on the left, a few light handling marks, and mostly
crisp checkering. Mechanically functions fine in double action, while the hammer doesn’t hold at full cock in single action.
The holster rig is fine with
attractively aged silver,
moderate wear,
and some loose
stitching. A scarce
example of a Colt
“Sheriff’s” Model 1877
Lightning revolver with a 2
inch barrel that is full of Frontier character!
Provenance: The Charles Marx Collection.

LOT 1071
Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle - Serial no. 131855, 44 Henry RF cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured in 1876 as a third model, this is a solid example of a Winchester Model 1866 that has the look of having spent time on
the Western Frontier. These “improved Henrys” were highly valued in the American West for their dependability and firepower. The top
of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and King’s patent marking, while the serial number is marked on the lower tang
in block numerals behind the trigger. The partial matching serial number, “1855”, is marked in the stock inlet and inside the buttplate. It is fitted with
a period-modified copper blade front sight and an elevation adjustable notch rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a trapdoor
crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included).
CONDITION: Very good, the iron showing a mottled grey-brown patina with some scattered light spotting/surface pitting and attractively aged patina on the brass
with a few scattered minor dings and tightly fitting sideplates. The wood is also very good with a couple minor edge chips and some scattered minor handling
marks. Mechanically excellent.
Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250
