Very Scarce Documented Antique Winchester Model 1893 Slide Action Riot Shotgun
with Factory Letter - Serial no. 11543, 12 gauge, 20 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock.
Manufactured in 1894, the second year of production, this is a solid example of the Winchester Model 1893
shotgun in “riot” configuration. This model was the first slide-action repeating shotgun built by Winchester and was manufactured between 1893 and 1897 with only approximately
31,000 made. The 1893 saw limited success as it was unable to handle modern smokeless loads, and in 1897 Winchester offered customers the option to trade in the 1893 for the
new 1897, and many were destroyed by Winchester when traded in. The included factory letter confirms the 20 inch barrel and gauge of this shotgun, as well as being received at the warehouse
on 18 July 1894 and shipped on 18 September 1894 in order number 20233. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address, model marking, patent date, and “12” at the breech. The two-line
trademark and model designation is marked on the action bar, and the serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame. It is fitted with a bead front sight. Mounted with a grooved walnut forearm
and plain round knob pistol grip stock with a correct smooth unmarked steel shotgun buttplate. Matching assembly number “2094” located on the butt of the stock and underside of the buttplate. Length
of pull is 12 7/8 inches.
CONDITION: Good, retains faint traces of the original finish with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina, a few scattered patches of light spotting, and some minor tool marks on the sides of the barrel at the breech. The refinished
wood is also good with a few scattered minor chips and handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The David L. DeLullo Jr. Collection.
Estimate: 2,000 - 3,500
