LOT 383
U.S. Marked Remington Model 700 Bolt
Action Rifle in U.S. Air Force M40 Sniper
Configuration with Redfield Accu-Range Scope - Serial no.
6257223, 7.62 mm Nato cal., 24 inch round bbl., matte black finish,
walnut stock. The receiver of this rifle was manufactured c. 1968. Introduced in 1966, the M40 was
intended as a standardized sniper rifle for United States Marine Corps service, being deployed for the
Vietnam War. The original M40 would be phased out for the M40A1 in the 1970s, partially due to issues with the
hardwood stock in jungle humidity. Statements from the consignor attribute this as a United States Air Force Contract
M40; while mainly a Marine weapon, Remington is known to have fulfilled a contract for delivery of 58 M40 rifles to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, and the serial number of this rifle is only 13 away from a known USAF M40
liquidated via the Civilian Marksmanship Program c. 2021. Produced without sights, with an unmarked heavyweight barrel mated to a “U.S.” marked clip-slotted receiver, drilled and tapped on the ring, bridge and left side, with a
Redfield scope rail and a proper matte black second generation Redfield 3-9x Accu-Range scope. Fitted with a smooth glass bedded pistol grip stock with sling swivels, raised right handed comb and cheekpiece, and a checkered
alloy buttplate. Matching serial numbers have been electro-penciled into the bolt body and inked/branded into the forearm channel of the stock; this style of numbering has been seen on other USAF attributed M40s.
CONDITION: Very fine as armorer modified, with 90% plus matte black finish, showing some thinning, light scratches and mild handling marks overall. The alloy components show mild wear. The stock is fine, with pinned repairs/
replacement material around the receiver, an extra sling swivel hole on the forearm, oxidation on the swivels, and minor dings and scuffs. Optics are sharp, with minor external wear. The front triggerguard screw can extended into
the bolt lug channel and interfere with operation, otherwise mechanically excellent.
Provenance: The Ryan Niederman Collection.
Estimate: 8,000 - 12,000
